CHP around LA

Over the years l have noticed the CHP running radar in their Crown Vics pretty much all along PCH in Malibu even clearly in LASD territory. So at the very least they seem to have a unit linger down in Malibu pretty regularly. Matter of fact saw this just a few weeks ago near Pepperdine.

Additionaly I have seen CHP up around the Kenneth Hahn State Park off La Cienega and down the hill towards La Tijera which stradles both LAPD and LASD Ladera Heights areas. Additionaly when I was doing work down in the harbor a few years back CHP units seemed to be active with traffic stops all around on surface streets and docks both ends off the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

Laslty way back until the 90s, the CHP patrolled Santa Monica Blvd thru Beverly Hills which was a State Road until it was deeded to the City of Beverly Hills. That was a bit of a inter agency challange when traffic incidents occured with often lenghty eta's the CHP to respond.

Hi Pete, great job on the map. One minor correction in LA. The 134 is covered by Altadena (brown) all the way to the 101 merge.

San Francisco Area - Highway 1

Here is an interesting CHP CAD log from tonight that shows San Francisco area taking a call for Highway 1 at the MacArthur Tunnel:

2418D0727 10:41PM Traffic Hazard - Vehicle SB 1 JNO MACARTHUR TUNNEL San Francisco
2418 Type: Traffic Hazard - Vehicle Location: SB 1 JNO MACARTHUR TUNNEL info as of: 7/27/2009 11:21:47 PM
10:45PM GGB 1097 /W O/HEAT VEH
10:41PM GGB ENRT -- VEH BLKG LN 1

So is this conclusive that they go at least as far north as the Golden Gate National Recreation Area? And apparently, the Bridge Authority does from the GGNRA north?

At least I know I'm not crazy... I'm still waiting to hear a PCH stop on west valley though. I remember when they handled Santa Monica Bl. That was a pain for filming as well... Because if you wanted to do one driving shot down the street, you technically needed an escort from two or even three departments, depending on how far you went in just that small area. Then the permit system was also different from normal city streets... Big pain.

CHP in Malibu

No Dave you are not crazy.

Here is a timely story from last week about the CHP West Valley office working to better manage traffic on the canyon roads like Topanga, Mulholland, Las Virgenes etc.

And as far as CHP in other parts of LA, just today saw CHP unit on a traffic stop at La Cienega and Rodeo road, so they(West LA) definately also patrol the area around Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area.

Interesting. It's funny, not to get too off subject... But while looking for info on this, I stumbled across a forum where somebody said they had been up on Mulholland Hwy. and they had kids on high performance go-carts pass by them. I hate to sound like an old f**t, but that's getting a little nuts. In my day I had the best racing bike of the time and ran a few canyons myself. But now for some reason, there's just too many people trying to do it, and they're not very good at it. I think the internet and media is probably to blame for a lot of it, as many roads and meeting places are publicized now. I thought the bike meet they do on Valley Circle on Wednesday nights was cool, until one night when I happen to get on the 101 going east at the same time they all decided to head east... What a bunch of idiots. Dozens of bikes just flying in all directions with no organization at all. It's a miracle they don't kill at least one person each Wednesday. But the Santa Monica's have become a sad place in general the last 10 years. It's pretty bad when you go all the way up to a place like Saddle Peak and see gang signs painted on the rocks.

Picked up a little possible info about something we discussed earlier. On my way home tonight I heard Temple Station (LASD) working something in the North San Gabriel (uninc.) area. An area basically along Rosemead Bl. between Las Tunas and Huntington Dr. Anyways, they were coordinating efforts with East LA CHP. I didn't think they went that far north but that's what was happening. Didn't get a chance to check out the CHP online CAD however in time (sorry)

Heard something the other night that didn't really change anything regarding Malibu, but it was interesting... 5150 in the home call on Broad Beach in Malibu. Single LASD officer couldn't handle and was being helped by FD to try and detain. They put out a general call to anybody for assistance. Both a West Hills and Ventura CHP unit responded. They actually called an LASD unit later to try and track down the Ventura guy, because CHP had called and told them they couldn't get him on the Ventura radio anymore.

Been a while since we discussed this, however tonight there was a TC reported on Topanga/PCH with Malibu Sheriff dispatched.

Upon arrival the unit had a discussion with the station desk on L-Tac informing them that the TC was about 1-mile up on Topanga and to roll CHP as it "was their area".

I had to go out just after, so I was not able to follow the call and result not sure if it was the LA or Ventura CHP, but clearly there is some territory up that way which they have responsibility for.
