Hi. I'm still really new to using my scanner and to this site. If I'm in the wrong area to ask for help I apologize. I know there is a feature where u can listen to radio transmissions in your area; I think it's called close call. I've used it before with the guided help of a friend but didn't take notes and I can't find it online. How can I access this feature. I may have the wrong name for it but I'm pretty sure it was close call or something similar. Thanks.

Hi. I'm still really new to this site and still trying to figure my way around so if I'm posting this in the wrong area I apologize. I have used a feature which I think Is called close call or something similar where i can listen to radio frequencies in my area. However I don't remember how to get to this feature in my scanner. I was told but never made note of it. If anyone can help that would be appreciated.

Close call can work that way but its more of an alert that there is nearby radio activity. You can learn all about this & your radio here: http://www.uniden.com/pdf/BC246Tom.pdf

& more about Close Call here: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Uniden_Close_Call

Also have a read of this: Uniden Close Call - The RadioReference Wiki

"The feature is designed to catch signals that are "Close" (hence, the name). While you might not get a hit often, it should be the case that any hit you do get is from a relatively nearby transmitter, so could be of enhanced interest to you.
For the Close Call feature to detect a signal, that signal must be about 15-18dB stronger than the RF noise floor in the band being checked. This means that there is no real way to predict the range within which signals will be caught. The factors that influence range, however are:
RF Noise Floor in the band (lower noise floor increases range)
RF Power Output of the Transmitter (higher power increases range)
Antenna being used to receive (too complicated to predict, but it does have an effect)(by acting as a tuned system, it can preselect within the required band. Other out of band signals will be attenuated) )
Note that "RF Noise Floor" in this context includes signals from any other transmitters operating in that band. So, at busy airports, getting a hit might be difficult (lots of VHF signal sources all the time, as well as a few continuous VHF broadcast sources). In general, a 1W portable will be captured up to around 100' (30m). 4W portable around 250' (75m), 25W mobile up to a half mile (805m) or more, and 100W base stations up to several miles/km. Other signals will affect Close Call range due to the nature of nearfield reception."

close call part 2

Hi, I posted a question a few days ago about how to access the close call function and was able to figure it out, so thanks. My next question is there a way that i can have close call as one of the quick keys so i can easly go back and forth from scanning to close call (if that makes sense) or is there a way that my scanner can go back and forth between scanning and the close call function if there is nothing active going on. I like to have my scanner on mostly at nite and want to be able to go between both. I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I'm a new scanner user and dont have a lot of knowledge on how to use it, but I find it interesting and find myself listening to my scanner for hours without realizing it.

Have you read, starting on page 86, about the Close Call feature on your scanner, as UPMan suggested earlier?

I think if you read through those few pages, you'll get your question answered and you'll know how to set up Close Call and then go back to scanning.

The process, albiet there's a couple of steps involved, will do what I think you're asking about.
