I believe they are on a low power 800mhz non trunked analog system. The radios they use are CSP trunked capable. I may be up in Suffield/Enfield over the few days and will check.

I drove by one of the DOC facilities and got traffic on several of the published freqs using several pl's. The signal was very weak and could not be received more than 3 miles away with a handheld scanner.

transmitted signal will have no bearing on the received signal strength. The quality of the radio and the gain of the antenna will determine reception.

Hmmm......I was wondering if i should get a new antenna....what would be the best signal grabbing antenna in the market????........i am not sure if there is a name brand or a certian antenna that you might be abel to suggest......let me know what i shoud do......because i can't get the New Haven or the Chesire prisons on any of my scanners or radios.....i have a GTX mobile that can do up to 15 watts and i have a Visar that can do up to 3 watts max....but i heard from a friend that the Prison uses EF Johnson Viking CX radios....and She said that they say "MULTI-NET on them......i am trying to get my hands on one of those...but good luck

If you are within 5 miles of a facility then you may have a chance but these systems are designed for use within the facility only. I am not familar with what antennas are available for 800MHz radios, but I would bet you will not get much better than 5 miles. The sites are only licensed for 15 watts each.

The Johnson radios are Multinet II capable but the prison system does not use Multinet or any other trunking on the listed freqs. The radios were provided after bidding for radios that would be P25 compliant. They just happen to be trunked capable too.

Did the DOC abandon their VHF channels all together? In the place that I use to work, we had them installed in our PD since we had a couple of prisons in our town. I never heard of the 800 channels unless they are facilliy specific. I know that the 800 license for Windsor Locks really isn't valid, as only the National Guard is up there. The DWI camp moved out years ago.

I forgot about this thread....

Was up doing some stuff at my old PD the other day, and the VHF corrections channels were still as active as before. Must be a gradual changeover thing..

Mark,
I know there are 3 (?) prisons up there. Are all those 800 in use daily or do they change? Also, if i remember correctly, when the DOC went to 800 the VHF was kept in the transport vehicles. that still hold true?

The 154.860 sounds like transport type communications only.
It is base and mobile units. As far as the 800 MHz I'm not sure
which of the three use which channel. I've heard them request
a unit to switch to another channel, and after they would show
up on one of the other 2 of the three frequencies. I'll listen and
try to figure out which channel corresponds to which frequency.

Also, it's been a couple of years, but when I worked for Charter
Communications in Newtown, I monitored the Gardner prison
on 853.4625 with a PL of 67.0. At the time, I didn't hear them
using any of the other 800 MHz frequencies.

i have heard (from the grapevine) that the doc will be going to the state police system sometime in the near future. i was told that the "old radio system needs to be replaced". in enfield, there is a tower on the property. this is very interesting, because by law, only the state police is allowed on the system. i was told this by a supervisor that tried to get the judicial marshalls on the system and the csp told him no way. maybe someone changed the law? hope this helps bill simpson

two things - i heard station 12 the other day. maybe power was down, who knows weather could be that when i do hear them, i'm actually lucky.

the other thing is i kinda doubt they'd replace the systetm again, i think they changed over to 800 in 97/98. the vhf system was real old think i actually bought a couple of GE master 2's that used to be doc's got a couple csp boxes too of course that was before the surplus store got privatized. God do I miss the deals I got there.
