Hi guys, you've been great help in the past and hopefully you can help again! I have the Uniden BCD396XT scanner, with the most updated FreeScan software on a laptop running Windows10.

When I try to upload my freqs I get the following error message:

My Device Manager says it's "Com4":

However in FreeScan I can't adjust the ComPort (there's nothing in the drop down)?

I'm eager to hear your thoughts as this is frustrating. I moved recently and I'm excited to scan in a new area!

Thanks guys.

? Hmm, scratching my head...I'm wondering if FS is waiting for a ready signal from the scanner, and since it can't find one, it doesn't know which port to use...you will need to set up the port on the scanner in any case (it's not allocated and defined by default), and the user guide has an article on this very subject...

Click on the com1 button to change it.
If it's not there, disconnect scanner and shut down freescan.

Reconnect scanner, then start freescan.

Thanks for the replies guys, I tried both of your tactics to no avail. Here's another shot of my troubles:

Looks like the drive is not loaded correctly for the serial to USB adapter. Are you sure that the one you have is compatible with Win10? There are some models/versions of the Prolific chip that do not work with Win7 and above.

I'd just order a new one that is supported by Win10.

I've run into a similar problem before, knowing the programming cables were connected to COM X, but still would not write to the scanner.

I powered down my computer and re-started it and everything worked after that. My suspicion is that some other software has "captured" the port preventing my scanner programming software from using it. Cycling computer power "releases" the port.

+1 on the driver issues. Load the correct drivers, and the port will show in FreeScan.

Hi guys, thanks for all the help. I bought a new serial-to-usb cord and the programming uploaded just fine. I guess sometimes the simplest of fixes will do the job!
