That will be a good one to listen for... It was fun when the last ham sat went up. If it's anything like those, it should be pretty easy to hear.

Yes, I know... But the latest one caused a stir when it went up because everybody wanted to try it.

Gee!! A japanese hand-held radio in an old Soviet Space Suit. America............ What a Country!
At least this space junk will burn up in the atmosphere as quickly as George Bush's popularity. Maybe the ionization trail will create a little DX Window that we can use.

Since this is a Russian experiment sponsored by an international group - I'm not sure what the connection to America / our President would be?

Does anyone remember the "mini-MIR" that was hand launched from the old MIr station? It has a beacon playing several different lauguages using around 1 watt. I heard it for a few nights in a row using my 2mtr HT & mobile. This was either 98 or 99.

Friend sent this link several days ago. I read it to the wife who wondered what was going on.
I said, while it was down-loading, " You gotta remember, everyine up there now is Russian".

When I read it to her the link we just about fell out... (Perhaps an interesting idea, if you don't have to track all that space-junk. Hope noboby hits it at 18K mph...)

If I recall it's 145.990 with FM modulation. Set to launch, or be thrown out the door, on 2-3-2006.
J-TRack will tell you when it's in range...

More Monitoring Mayhem- I do love it so...

It will burn up an re-enter probably within a few days, at worst in a few weeks. Nobody else is in the path.

And you can watch it released (by hand) live on NASA TV http://www.nasa.gov Friday after 5pm EST.

Go to Frank Bauer KA3HDO's article on SuitSat There you will find a good deal of information on what you'll need, and most importantly, online resources to help you do online satellite tracking. Hopefully JTrack will be updated in the next day or so for SuitSat.

Interestingly, the article does not mention the SSTV software that you can use to decode that mode (probably because Frank didn't know anything about it). I'm a complete novice at that mode, but as I understand it, MM-SSTV is an excellent choice for Windows folks, and it's free. In addition, there a MM-SSTV Yahoo Group which, no doubt, has had numerous messages flying back and forth about getting set up to 'see' the SuitSat pic. If you're a Mac user, you want to use MultiMode
The SSTV mode that will be used will be Robot 36 73s and good hunting Mike

If you don't have a high-gain yagi pointed at the path of it, you won't hear anything.

No, not pointing up...pointing directly at the suit, at an angle that would indicate that the suit was clear of the horizon. There is software to both calculate the correct angle and point the antenna automatically. As I understand it, the signal is very weak; even folks with very good satellite receiving stations are having a very hard time hearing it. The suit is evidently tumbling, and it's causing rapid and unpredictable fading of the signal. 73s Mike
