I have been closely monitoring a new Trunking System in Ga that I often drive through. I have been putting my 536hp scanner in “search mode “ in order to find the frequencies in the Trunking System and after several weeks of monitoring, I believe I have found them all. I have created a “Favorites List” and programmed the Trunking System into the scanner. I noticed that the scanner seems to hold on the Talkgroup ID of the agency that it is receiving but no sound is coming out of the speaker. (Every now and then something will come out of the speaker, but not often) I’m not sure if something is wrong with the scanner or what is happening. I have checked my scanner twice to make sure that I entered everything into the scanner correctly (frequencies, Talkgroup IDs, Color Codes) and I’m sure that everything is entered correctly. What am I doing wrong? Is there something wrong with the scanner? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Do you have it set up as conventional or a MotoTRBO system? If as a MotoTRBO system, you need to run LCN finder to find the correct LCN order.

Thanks for the reply. I have it set up as Mototrbo and I have already run the LCN Finder

It is not an Encrypted Talkgroup issue. The Talkgroup IDS are visible in the search mode of the scanner. Thanks for the reply

That is the behavior of an encrypted talk group on the 536. The TGID will show, you might even catch a Radio ID. Does it sound anything like this?

Thanks for the reply. I am very much aware of what an encrypted Talkgroup sounds like, and the Talkgroups aren’t encrypted in this System. I’m 100% sure of it. What is really aggravating about this situation is that I can hear all of the System Frequencies in “search mode” of the scanner crystal clear, but once I programmed them into the scanner, I can’t hear them. Again, I see the scanner stopping on the Talkgroup, but most of the time no volume is coming out of the speaker. It’s like the scanner is having a hard time receiving the Trunking System.

Any possibility of putting a You Tube video together to demonstrate this? I think you confirmed the LCN order was correct you mentioned as well as programming as MotoTRBO which you also confirmed you're seeing CAP+, CON or IDS when the frequencies come up in conventional search mode?

I was just up there in Screven County, Ga (where this Trunking System is) monitoring the system and I should have made a video of my scanner acting up, but I didn’t. I will do it tomorrow. It is a Motorola Connect Plus Trunking System.

You are correct. This is actually a new Talkgroup ID that I discovered. The Talkgroup ID (10113) is Jenkins Co Sheriff talking on the same Trunking System (286) as what Screven County is.

If this is your actual programming, it's not set up as MotoTBO, but in Conventional Mode which would cause it to "hang up" on data bursts on the talk group. Set it up as MotoTRBO, put in ID Search mode and you're issue will go away.

This is just a screen shot of my scanner in “search mode” capturing a Trunking System Frequency that I took with my phone. I already have my System set up as MotoTrbo and my ID Mode set up to search.

Your signal strenght seem to be at max so it should receive ok. Check by pushing the func dial and the vol knob to activate the error rate display.

The control channel sends out the TG number and what LCN the TG are setup to. The display will show the TG and Unit ID and then switch to the corresponding LCN you have programmed to a frequency. If that LCN have the incorrect frequency you'll hear nothing as the TG isn't transmitted on that frequency and the scanner will eventually return to the control channel. This doesn't happen when you do a search or monitor one channel in conventional mode.

So everything indicates that the LCN numbering seems to be incorrect or you have mixed in frequencies from different sites.
The system is new and one of your frequencies are not yet in the RR database and you also have a new site that is not in RR. So it could be some system setup problems as well. If you do not have other systems from other users on the exact same frequencies I recommend to not program color codes to avoid additional problems and check that service types match the ones you have enabled.

Thanks for the great advice! I certainly will do that and hopefully we can get this system straightened out.

I usually get a lot of false decode with that signal level and error rate. I usually hear voice (at manual threshold level 6-7) but it's often garbled and the TG and Uid are not to be trusted. Error rates less than 5 often gives a reliable signal.
