3. I have found you usually get what you pay for, and at thirty dollars per year it is good value both from supporting the site and getting the additional benefits for members only.

Gill, thanks for your kind comments. I could not have said #3 better above.

While I can't say I'm wild at this new idea, my contributions have generally exceeded the amount Lindsay has asked for so it's no big deal for me.

If anybody can't understand what is going on here, just try reading some of the snipes and snide remarks aimed at Lindsay over the last 6 months or so. Lindsay has a family to take care of, including a new baby, plus a job in the real world. Had it been me, I'd have responded in a far stronger manner sooner than this. Several of the more constant whiners on here have repeatedly made the point that "donations" weren't fair, in their eyes, so Lindsay has eliminated the donations. You can subscribe, or not, it's up to you. There are other sites that charge just to look at their data, which is generally incomplete and out-of-date. Lindsay has again promised that the data submitted will continue to remain free.

I personally get very little from the value-added features, an occasional pdf report, the My RR page which I look at once or twice a month. My contributions have been because I felt the site is worth supporting. That's the value I get from here.

Radio Reference is a tremendous resource. Thank you, Lindsay, for all your hard work and efforts. Thanks also to all the moderators and admins for their efforts.

Alright enough of this whinning
1) $30/yr works out to a wallet busting 8.2 cents per day( you could probably find enough spare change in your couch cushions!!) :D
2) The subscription is $7.50/qtrly so if your fund are a little tight at the time dont donate!!
3) No one is forcing you to donate/subscribe.
I will be the first to admit I was a little shocked by the change, but considering what you get, $30 isnt too bad!

Ok I am now off my soapbox!
Keep up the good work Lindsay & staff

:)

Well don't pay! That simple!

Uh, yeah thanks for clarifying for yourself. Did you read what I wrote? To ME (as in myself), the CURRENT (meaning the current services you get access to with the "donation") would not be utilized enough to warrant US$30 a year subscripbtion for MYSELF, but in the FUTURE (as in some time further down the timeline from now), that could change due to NEW (features we don't current have) that could be implemented, I may subscribe to get access to those features.

Yes, I did read and understood what you wrote. I realize now that I shouldn't have quoted your message and should've just made a "stand-alone" post next time, sorry.

I wanted to "clarify" the point that the main features of the website will still be available for free since many people seem to think or post as if they won't be able to use the website anymore if they don't pay.

Let's keep in mind that the money also goes to the upkeep and recurring costs to keep the website running.

So even if someone doesn't use or care about the extra features, at least they could help by donating some money every now and then, like someone suggested earlier.

It will start July 1st for folks that have contributed money. For someone that has contributed $25.00 in the past, they will get a full 1 year subscription. For someone that has contributed $5.00 in the past, they will get a 90 day subscription. This rewards the folks that have contributed money in the past, since they'll get a little extra over the newcomer.

Good Move!

Stops the *****ing and moaning.

I do want something else for my money though.

DB access in file a common format. This way I do not have to depend on a vendor to read it for me. Yes I know about the web Query but I am sure it can be better easier and more concise.

Please?

I think I see a lot of people in agreement - just saying it different ways (like kikito and Matteblack). I also think it was time Lindsay finally admitted (if only to himself) that the donation model wasn't sustainable. Tying a donation to extra bonus features is really a service model - that requires a subscription pricing model (but this is HIS baby, not mine).

This fuss over the subscription only applies to the value-added features like the web service and nifty PDF reports.

You can hop onto the site anonymously and view everything; wiki, database, and forums - one page at a time.

If you are willing to register an email address, you get the extra benefit of posting questions in the forums; plus send and receive PMs.

For the subscription, you get all the extras. Lindsay has set the bar very low - you can purchase three months worth at a time.

Suppose you have a PRO-96 which you program with Win96 or you have a Uniden which you program with one of Gommert's programs. For $7.50 these programs can download whatever data you need without all that typing and you've got 90 days to figure it all out.

If you like having that capability at your disposal all year 'round, just keeping renewing or even pre-pay for a full 12 months.

If you're flat broke, lost your internet connection, pawned your fancy digital scanner, you still have access to all the data so you're really not losing anything.

Cost's

I have payed in the past,, but to change mind stream is stupid. Make a policy and stick to it!! Now the cost has gone from a one time $15.00, (and that was fine) to $30.00 a year.. This seems to be excessive. Yes, this is a 1 of a kind site, and yes, the information is great, BUT this Change to my mind is unexplaneable.. I understand the costs of maintaining a site like this is great, but now, at $30 ayear X lets say a 1000 members.. is $30K ayear.. I guess I would like to see what I am going to get for $30 ayear, considering that most of the information is member generated. FLAME AWAY...

Bill,

The current donation limit is 5.00... that hasn't changed. I previously indicated that we would up that to 15.00 starting on June 1st, however I received some very good private and public feedback that indicated that was not the best route for us to take, for a number of reasons. Most important being the 'retroactive' component.

This new approach is a blended approach..

Let me reiterate two very important things:

1. We are not locking down the data and charging for it, we are just changing the donation model to a subscription model. If you just absolutely positively never intended to donate money, or purchase a subscription, then nothing changes for you.

2. If you have previously donated money, you are going to automatically get "free" subscriptions with time limits based upon your past donation. I'm still breaking down the actual mapping, however it is going to be above and beyond what a new person joining would pay, simply because the individuals that have donated in the past I think deserve a little something extra.

Actually, you would be good through probably around August 2007. (1 Year from July 1st 2006 + bonus time for donation)

The new process starts July 1st, 2006, and existing contributors get that extra bonus timeset due to them being donators before the subscription model takes effect.

Costs

Bottom line.. What am I getting for $30.00 ayear. I want to support this site, and an do not want to see it go away.!! But, your have gone and increased 6X+.. And what does one get for $30 ayear.. A profile, pdf ability, and the most important part, the ability to to imported to sortware that I had to BUY.. I guess I am looking at other software in this price range, anti-spyware, anti-virus. and there is update for the company.. NOT the users..

Like CSV sound nice if it could include the last update date. It would make it easier to keep track of a large system like MPSCS. I have three scanners and only software for one to download from this site. It would be nice if I didn't have to get different software for each scanner to get information from this site.
