That is a possibility. I mainly use a quad-core notebook for DSDPlus.

Definitely sounds like a slow PC issue more than anything. The amount of cores on a CPU doesn't mean much depending on how old it is, and notebook CPUs are notoriously worse than any quad core you'd find in a desktop. Not only do they typically run at lower clock speeds, but they can even throttle depending on the battery or heat generation of the system, making it run even slower. Running DSD+ on a relatively modern laptop shouldn't be too awful though, as long as it isn't a Celeron, Atom, AMD E-series, etc. The best thing you can do is enable Extra CPU Loading in DSD+ by hitting e on the keyboard if it isn't already. If that doesn't work, a new system would be wise, but be aware of what you purchase. A modern system doesn't automatically mean it's a usable one.

Also I can't confirm it, but using DSD+ on a busy simulcast system likely uses even more system resources than usual. There's no simulcast in my area to confirm, but DSD+ never gave me any scanning issues. It actually decodes way better than my Whistler 1065. I don't even use that Whistler anymore, it's become a joke.

My only complaint about DSD+ is the audio quality. But, speech is often still recognizable. It really cuts down on the amount of SDRs I'd need if I wanted to use SDRTrunk or something, so I'm okay with that.

I agree, the audio quality from DSDPlus isn’t the best, but speech is usually still intelligible.
To improve it, I use Voicemeeter Potato. I route the audio output from DSDPlus into it and apply some EQ and adjustments before sending it to my speakers.
That makes the final audio much more pleasant to listen to.

Yeah I do something similar. Bought a Soundcore Select Go 4 bluetooth speaker that I route my audio through. It's a great speaker especially for the price, and it allows you to edit the EQ. I've basically just removed the lows entirely and adjusted the mids and highs a bit, and it sounds decent.

Best thing is that I just keep the speaker plugged in 24/7 and with virtual audio cables, I can just keep DSD output as a virtual audio cable so that all I really need to do is turn the speaker on and it will automatically connect to my PC and the speaker will switch over to listen to the virtual audio output. Turn it off at night but leave DSD+ running so that my rdio scanner server still uploads calls and I can still listen to the scanner in my bedroom from my phone or PC if something big is going on.

The issue with doing that is with running multiple DSD+ instances, I'll hear traffic just talking over one another. My solution to that is to just lower the output volume on one DSD instance that isn't as important as the other lol. So I can still hear both, but one doesn't really drown out the other.
