I suppose you are right. I guess us old folks that recall having computers that came with NOTHING but DOS are actually ahead on this one.

I think the "Windows port" is really a "MS-DOS port." That's why people who have never seen a command prompt before are having so much trouble.

I have no problem running the program from the command prompt, it is on my computer, I hear the apco 25 digital signal in analog, I just can't make any adjustments to it. I will figure it out, eventually.

Partial Success

I've tried the Windoz version on two laptop computers (both only have MIC-IN); a five year old Fujitsu XP machine and a brand new i5 Fujitsu Lifebook with Windows 7. I can't get rid of the rushing static noise from my scanner's discriminator audio on my Windows 7 machine, even trying all the steps in CapeCod's tutorial. However, on the XP machine I was able to finally eliminate the rushing static by unlicking every audio input except the MIC-IN in the recording settings. On both machines, starting the program with the MS DOS prompt, the program is writing the signal decodes. Only the XP machine is actually decoding ProVoice but it's only at about 50%. I have much better decoded audio with my ASUS notebook with Ubuntu. My next step is to install the program on a Windoz desktop computer with an actual LINE-IN audio connection. Thanks for writing a Windoz version.

To stop the input from playing over your speakers, change it in the Properties of the recording device.
right click the little speaker icon in lower right of your screen, choose recording devices, double click the one you are using to open the properties, choose the listen tab, uncheck "listen to this device".

Now after playing around a bit I have noticed that the ambulance along with the rushing air sound as well as the noise that you hear when listening to the OPP with just a regular analog scanner comes in on the left speaker only. On the right speaker I get the OPP only, no ambulance and no noise?

accesd denied

So now when I go into c:\dsd4winv2>dsd -h I get access denied? So what does this mean why would I be denied access.

Tried it for the second time, now it tells me " dsd" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file?

Chris,
The only thing unchecking "listen to this device" does is cut the rushing sound volume down about 1/2. I'm hearing the rushing noise in the left speaker and decoded voice in the right speaker? Again this is Windoz 7 I'm dealing with here, and a Realtek "high definition audio" soundcard.

Any chance you are hearing encryption from the left? I assume the program splits the two channels of audio into the left and right speakers.

Negative, it is a constant rushing noise even when there is no transmission, like the squelch is off. When there is a transmission, I hear the garbled digital in the left speaker and decoded voice in the right. OK, just figured out how to disable the left channel in the Speaker Properties. I'm still hearing a low amount of rushing noise on the right speaker, and it remains in the backround during a decoded transmission, which comes through loud and clear. It certainly is not tollerable to listen to in real time. But I suppose it would be tollerable if I used a vox recording program (like ScanRec) and set the threshold high enough to only hear the voice, and played it back later.

I have the same problem so t resolve it I shut off the speaker with the rush air noise, no more problem.

Here is how to solve the "rushing sound" that some of you are hearing when running DSD.

Open Control Panel.
Under the VOLUME tab in the DEVICE VOLUME section click the ADVANCED button.
Put a check mark in the box next to MUTE at LINE IN and MICROPHONE or drop the levels all the way down.

Newbie Here!

Hi guys, I am not new to scanning but I am new to using my comp to do it, how exactly are you guys pulling the transmissions? Do I still need a scanner and does it then get plugged into my PC then use the dsd or mototrbo software to decode it thru the PC? If I am in the wrong forum please direct me to the newbie guide, thanks!

If I drop the mic input level all the way down then it won't decode. When I get more time I need to install the program on a tower PC with a Line-IN input and see if that will work better. I do appreciate the suggestions, please keep them coming.

Basically, you need a scanner with a Discriminator Tap (information in the Wiki), and the raw audio from the Tap is input to the Line In or Mic In on your PC, to be decoded.

"It sounds like you are dropping the level in the RECORDING section. The level for mic or line in needs to be done in the PLAYBACK section."
Yes, this works on a desktop I just installed the program on. Should work on the laptop also. Thanks

Under Playback you can monitor what is coming from the microphone or Line Input. This will come through on your speakers. If you don't want to hear the rush of the raw discriminator output through your speakers you have to Mute them or turn the levels all the way down in the Playback section.

You will have to go to the recording section to set the Mic or Line levels.

dsd polarity

How does one change the polarity when listening to P25? I have it on my desktop and it shows -p25p1 and I hear the audio fine. On my laptop I have +p25p1 and I can't hear it. I would like to change it from + to -, any ideas?
