I have dsdforwin v2 running in Windows XP, I have an Icom F1721 Mobile with discriminator tapped and with a 10k resistor inline, connected to line in of my pc, I hear NXDN traffic on the radio, and I have adjusted recording levels to all avail, but the dsd only shows

Digital Speech Decoder 1.4.1
mbelib version 1.2.3
Audio In/Out Device: /dev/dsp

I can unmute the playback of the line in and can hear just fine, does anyone have any suggestions?

In XP, in the Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices, make sure you have the Default Audio device set appropriately.

It should already be set proper, but if you added another sound card source as the input, you'll need to make sure and set that as your Default Device for Sound Recording.

Using dsdforwin v2 under Windows XP SP3.

Command string: dsd -fr -mq -xr

I am decoding MotoTRBO from a local user with fair to good results. I have the line input level on my soundcard set as low as it will go and I still get a lot of errors on voice transmissions. Nonvoice appears to come through error-free.

I'm seeing a lot of those "Unknown burst type 1101" messages here, too.

Some questions about the list of DSD commands:

1) What is the default framerate for the Datascope display? Running in the CMD window, I just see very rapidly scrolling ASCII boxes and I'd like to slow that down to something readable. The ASCII scrolling is constant even without any signal present. (Can we get the nice UI from the Linux version on Windows, too?)

2) What values are acceptable for Verbosity?

3) I notice under Windows that the default audio devices are listed as /dev/dsp instead of /dev/audio.

File management:

1) Even with a directory specified after the -d switch, all datafiles are created in dsd's home directory.

2) When using the -w switch, the full filename including extension needs to be specified.

3) I get a ton of .amb files when the program runs. Are these the "mbe data" referenced in the command list with the -r switch?

Windows Media Player cannot figure out how to play the "wav" files created by dsdforwin.

I am checking NAC's on Federal frequencies. One example, has a known NAC of 167, but DSD shows a NAC of 567.
Any ideas?

I have DSD for windows installed on a pc along with Proscan. The setup is remotely installed at a tower site and I listen over a wifi IP link. The radio is a BCD996T with a discriminator tap. Regular audio feeds the laptop's built in microphone jack. The discriminator jack feeds a small USB audio sound card dongle.

I am trying to figure out how to switch audio devices with DSD. How can I tell what device it is using and how would I direct it to the USB dongle?

I'm trying to decode some P25 unencrypted coms to get a feel for the software.

Base band audio is being taken from an Icom R8500, fed into the sound card line-in.
The sound card is set to 48khz, and the input volume is set so the spikes, as seen on an O scope program, are rounded and not clipped.
All I can manage are garbled transmissions.
I've played with the Mic in and line in volumes, all with the same results.
Also tried inverting the signal: -xr
The modulation is C4FM. Is there another switch for optimizing it?

I am listening to a stand alone scanner set to the same frequency, and receiving good coms.

Mancow: That USB dongle MUST be the default recording device for DSD for Windows to work.

W4RTT: If you can, try building an external cable with a 10k ohm resister built into the positive side. I've found this to make a difference in some cases where the discriminator audio comes standard with the receiver.

All of my receiver/scanners have taps. The ones on the scanners all have the resistors, so I'll try on of those.

Well, it didn't help the decoding of the voice, but it did improve the NAC identification.
Did I see something in one of the posts about using an Eye Diagram for setting the volume?

I'm still hoping for some responses to my notes above (Message #142).

Dave...I didn't notice these were questions: I thought they were statements/observations you've made.

3) I notice under Windows that the default audio devices are listed as /dev/dsp instead of /dev/audio.
I agree.

File management:
1) Even with a directory specified after the -d switch, all datafiles are created in dsd's home directory.
I agree. I can't find a way of changing this (no big issue - I just move the files later).

2) When using the -w switch, the full filename including extension needs to be specified.
I agree, or I associate the file I create with Realplayer or Win Media Player.

3) I get a ton of .amb files when the program runs. Are these the "mbe data" referenced in the command list with the -r switch?
Yes. NXDN and TRBO voice decodes create .amb files, P25 creates .imb files.

>Windows Media Player cannot figure out how to play the "wav" files created by dsdforwin.
Mine works fine. It *won't* work while DSD is still writing data to the wav file. You need to stop dsd.exe running to remove te file lock, then access the .wav file.

Thanks, Jim. I will play with the voice recording some more and see if I can figure out what is going on locally.

BTW, I corrected my audio configuration from one wrong type to another. My actual built-in soundcard is SigmaTel.

Noise

I just downloaded this program today, I have my discriminator tap coming off the external speaker of the scanner to the line in. First problem when I unzip it it doesn't ask me what file i want to put it in it just opens it. I can only access the program from "my documents" so I can't make any changes at the command prompt.

Second, while I do hear for example the OPP in the clear but with low volume, I still hear the digital noise in the background as if I was listening to the OPP without DSD running, and I also hear the rush noise that has been mentioned. IN the "in line in properties" under the sound management, I have unchecked the "listen to this device" box and I still hear the rush noise. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

I also would like to thank the author of this program, you are nothing short of a genius.

The discriminator tap doesn't come off the speaker. It comes from a chip in the logic cicruit inside the scanner. Speaker audio won't work.

Sorry, bad choice of words, from the discriminator tap to the speaker out. One more thing is i can't figure out the path to use at the command prompt, nothing I try works.
