which the consumer already has in CB, MURS, FRS/GMRS.

That's true, but CB falls short on range during high solar activity, FRS is a "Walkie Talkie" band that's short range, and GMRS without repeaters has less range than CB... I believe the 49 MHz service will fall somewhere in between CB and the 6 meter ham band with regards to range and utility...

based on what metric? Can you explain your beliefs?

My belief is based on experience... Back when I was a kid I started as a CBer, when there was skip conditions a legal setup had a hard time communicating 1 to 2 miles at best.. Heck, I remember days when out of state stations would roll in at 20 dB over S-9 and take out local base stations less than a mile from my location..

FRS is a 250 mw walkie talkie band, that's not a "belief" that's a fact.. Same goes for GMRS, without a repeater most users will have very limited range (except the guy living on the hill)...

BTW: I am not in the Radio Sales business or the manufacturing business. So my MURS expansion idea was purely aimed at providing the public with another communications tool... NOT a hobby type service, simply a new comm tool...

yeah, private security.

does the basically phone addicted public think they need ANOTHER device to lug around? no. They want their phones. Radio use is going to decline as phone/internet connectivity continues to take over. They don't need/want another fragment of an overused spectrum divvied up and to have to spend more money on another electronic device if they can just get a newer phone. Think about it. You're rapidly approaching "Old Man Yells at Cloud" territory on this idea here.

Yeah, I work for a living, so what about it???

As far as the rest of your comment, I agree with you if we're talking about the big city folk that think cell phones work no matter what happens..

You said you weren't in the radio or manufacturing business, I just acknowledged it. Chill out.

Do you see cell phone towers being taken down? Do you see orbiting communications (ie Iridium) satellites being deorbited to eliminate space debris? Do you see telco companies rolling wires up back on to spools and pulling down trunk lines? How about point to point high speed backbones?

the populace has spoken, industry has spoken, the gov'mint has spoken, you've obviously spoken. I just don't think your idea has any traction.

RR = check.
QRZ = check.
craigslist?

I think it's time to put this nonsense to a rest.

If anyone has an idea for a new radio service or an expansion of an existing radio service in the FCC's jurisdiction, they will have to petition the FCC to change their rules (the FCC makes rules not laws, only Congress does that). That petition will have to provide the FCC with valid reasons, not assumptions or perceptions, why the new service or the expanded service is needed. That petition will have to explain how the existing users of the spectrum that the petitioner wants to assign to the new or expanded service will be compensated for the loss of their spectrum. That petition will have to show the FCC how the new or expanded service will fit their existing band plans and the ITU Region 2 band plans. If the FCC opens the petition for comments, the petitioner will have to answer the concerns raised by people who do not favor the petition.

Frankly, I don't think this idea is going anywhere.
