I am thinking about picking up a Dell Poweredge Dual Core Xeon Server for my Home Computer/Server for RoIP,

I have an Original Windows XP Professional 64-Bit CD with the COA sticker i would like to install on it,
I haven't yet picked up the server,

But here are a few questions i have,

1. I have a VGA to HDMI Cable for my 42' Flat screen, will this work with the server?
2. Can i still run Internet Explorer, AIM, Google Earth on a server?
3. Do servers have a soundcard for audio input/output?
4. Do servers have a Video Card or do i have to install one?

Any info would help

No sound card usually, but you can put one in. If you install XP Pro you can run anything you would on any other PC with XP Pro. It will come with a video card, but not one that will be anything spectacular so don't expect to watch video or play games on it.

why would you put XP 64 for a server? drivers are almost non-existent for XP 64

i would throw Vista Business or 7 Pro/Ultimate 64 Bit

I agree with you. I think he was trying to use what OS he owned. But if he has the $$ to buy a Dell server, he'd have the $$ for a real OS. Either that or he "doesn't like" Vista/7 like a lot of people use as an excuse.

Which I don't understand, I'm using 7 Ultimate right now and it's better than XP.

wow, I think this is a little bit overkill, if it only for the fun of owning a server well go ahead. Now if I understand correctly you want to use this in the living room or shack ? I hope you don't mind earring server fans. Also take a look at the driver on dell page no driver for XP...

You maybe want to take a look at the Precision work station.

What model is the Poweredge server???

I currently run Windows XP 64 using a Gigabyte mother board and have no trouble. But OEM you may.

Drivers will be an issue. When I got my updated computer 4 or 5 years ago, I loaded XP x64 and had so many problems getting drivers, I gave up....it just wasn't worth the hassle.

All Dell mainboards are Intel (along with Gateway). You can go to the Intel website and use their ActiveX app to determine the chipset. It will also list the drivers to use.

As was mentioned, if you've got the money to buy a server, you should put a server OS on it (either pre-configured from Dell or buy it seperately and load it yourself).

From owning a dell poweredge, I would install Server 2008(I had from windows NT to Server 2008 on my machines),use a Server OS for a server system(you don't HAVE to,but I reccomend it)
