I don't suppose anyone has either an EMP simulator or valid reports of (modern) equipment that has been tested in an EMP simulator?... I realize the actual waveform is classified, but there are unclassified versions of it available.

Are there plans for one anywhere (like a de-nueralyzer from MIB II?

Wouldn't that be a fun part for ARRL as part of their equipment reviews.

Thinking about a simulator, the E-2 part of the EMP is similer to a near hit with lightning. The E-3 part of the pulse is long and would just take lots of power and could technically be done easily (I think), but the E-1 part of the pulse is super short and one of the more important parts of it, if the E-1 disables / flashes over protection devices, then the rest of the simulation isn't as valuable as it could be.

Of course your neighbors and the FCC may want some containment on any simulator.

The most recent report I am aware of is the EMP Commission report (2004). However that does have a lot of good informaiton in it that can be used to calculate energy and field levels. Homepage and http://www.empcommission.org/docs/empc_exec_rpt.pdf

I didn't see the information for calculating density or anything.... Nice resource. But as they point out, there isn't enough testing going on, a small private range would be nice, or at least access to a range.

Good point, essentially nothing would operate, the movie The Day After Lauri mentioned as old as it is, demonstrated that, none of the cars would start.

Surely one could wind a replacement ignition coil! Lord knows I've wound my share of transformers, un-uns, etc.

If one had a vehicle with a 50's or 60's vintage diesel engine (no ignition system to worry about), you might have a sporting chance, so long as you can find some sort of fuel to run through the thing.

Hmmmmm..... Oh-Kay.....a Diesel engine----- what about the starter motor ? there has been no discussion of EMP effects on those, and hand cranking those is pretty much out of the questions.... and there is a form of ignition to consider---> what's to initially fire the glow plugs when the alternator or generator is fried and the battery has gone flat ?

I am not being a smart ass; I really don't have any answers, but now I am curious.

On the other hand fuel is a little easier. I have used kerosene, and have it from trusted sources who have done so-- that they have run just about anything oily.... cooking oil to deep fryer slops.

Three... An attempt to hurt the U.S. by people that have limited means, like a partial EMP strike at 50-75Km or so in altitude and effecting one (maybe two if extra capable and ambitious) coastal areas.

Why the focus on the two coasts? A single large enough EMP could be launched from a freighter in the Gulf of Mexico that would effectively affect the entire US and most of Canada!

My landlord has an extensive long and short barrel weapons in his armory/shelter. I am welcome to use any of them in a SHFT situation. He also has 30,000 rounds of 7.62mm NATO on hand. That's more than enough to handle the zombie and/or cannibal hordes!
