Come in late to this thread, and reminded of this song, played at the end of the movie "Blast from the Past" :):):)

And Australia gets a mention :)

On the beach, First version with, Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire.

Fail-Safe, first version with Henry Fonda and Larry Hagmann......... the day after......... I agree with Lauri.

If it's a single, high-altitude nuke blast over the center of the US, not all regions will receive the EMP equally. There's that.

Carry on.
Unfortunately if an event happens that will not be the scenario LOL. If it's a war, there will be considerably more detonations than that.

I agree with those who say that we are probably closer now than we have been in a long time with a hot war between the United States and Russia by proxy, given our regime, I think the risk is higher than people think.

If we get lit up, EMP will be the least of our problems ;)

more should engage in this:

I tend to think in terms of stoicism... Thanks for that information it is a treasure trove I will keep for reference. I plan on looking at that later tonight, looks like good reading.

I guess for the majority of people EMP won't make a lot of difference other than to make dying more inconvenient. There will be some people in the right locations who would benefit from preparation and planning prior to a nuclear event, thereby seeking, EMP immunity.

Oh yes, Hitchcock was a genius, they don't make them like that anymore, I just noticed a large congregation of birds on the power lines by my house, seems to be growing by the minute... Oh I'm sure it's nothing. :)

Thanks again for that reading material... Bob.

The bottom line is in an event on this scale was to happen. The last thing in the world you would be thinking it's what to the program into your radio in the last few minutes.

Just get out your hose and suck the other gas tanks.
Others will be doing the same, and using your fuel. The fuel stations will be run low, quickly, and the refineries are not likely to be functional.

Alternators! Why not the weakest part? The voltage regulator is connected to the field or rotor. The stator is connected to rectifier diodes that output the current to recharge the battery. The stator diodes are big and rugged. The voltage regulator transistor not so much. The EMP induced pulse from the field rotor will probably smoke the voltage regulator. If it shorts to ground, the alternator output goes max voltage. If it opens up, there is no charging current. It won't be good for the battery long term.

personally got an appropriate amount of ammo...tis maintaining possession of the firearms that i'm concerned about...

shame but knee jerk & emotionalized legislation, both federal & state level, is very difficult to overturn once passed...sigh!!

trentbob, i have some airgun pellets to barter for a gallon of gas...

[sidebar:
CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — A Cary gas station owner says thieves stole nearly 300 gallons of premium gas from an underground storage tank.

[owner] hopes someone can help police find the vehicle that drove into his gas station parking lot before sunrise Sunday morning. It was at that time he says nearly 300 gallons of premium gasoline disappeared from an underground storage tank.

Haha no thanks Jack , actually I'm an old wheel gun guy and I also have an adequate inventory of 38 caliber 158 grain semi wadcutters. New federal proposed gun laws don't even come close to what many states already have in place, I think it's the slippery slope issue that's a concern.

But enough of that, we don't want to go off topic here.

I live rather close to McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix and Willow Grove Air National Guard Base, I am also situated rather close to Philadelphia so I'm thinking I have no reason to establish EMP immunity, I won't need it.

It would be interesting to hear from those who are situated in locations where there could be some longevity after an attack before succumbing to radiation poisoning, where having operating vehicles and operating communication systems would be vital.

Yes, Bob--- under those circumstances I wouldn't get my panties in a wad preparing for the "pulse."

Here is an amusing little tale similar to your case.

The Naval radio station NSS at Annapolis Maryland had long since outlived its usefulness in communicating with submarines-- never-the-less, they continued sending encode messages anyway. Their mission became one of tying up some of the Soviet intelligence's energy in decoding the gibberish-- It was all part of collapsing the Empire penny by penny.

When tension eased with Détente and we started to scale back the bellicosity, the Soviets pointed out that pesky radio station.

"Annapolis is a beautiful little city, Comrades---your Naval Academy is quite charming...."
"We want you to know that that radio station is a first-strike target for multiples of our missiles"

The station went 'dark' overnight.

EMP's ?... "Sh*t happens"....... but we can go 18th century.

Radio's ? Who will be left to talk to and why ?

Sorry Cowboys

Like the Amish. Yea:)

or for you, probably closer to "little house on the prairie", or fankly how things were in the 1940's at best.

Of course I think the official estimate is 80% to 90% of us dead by the end of the first year.

Barring conflict deaths, how many would die from just a lack of insulin or other common life saving meds.

Thanks
Joel

Would a "magnetic amplifier" be usable as an amplifier? I've been giving them some thought recently and if it were possible to get them to oscillate, could be a useful transmitter, coupled with a crystal detector for a receiver, communications could be rebuild-able to a small extent. Anyone have experience with these?

(or just go straight to spark gap and trench radio receivers).

Thanks
Joel

.............. Think of me as a Beth Dutton of Yellowstone fame :sneaky:

Yep oh, I posted my location relative to all of those key military targets already knowing I am toast.

Very cool story about the NSS station LOL.

Yes, with the introduction of Gorbachev and the period of Detente I was in the position of acclimating mostly Physicians and engineers to American Life, they fled the Soviet Union through Israel with the "ground burning beneath them" I'm sure you can appreciate what I'm saying. Made some lifelong friends doing that, but the routine obligatory interviews with the FBI grew tiresome. I was a State Department Foreign Service Officer candidate for four years at that time, I got very close, I'm glad now I never got commissioned.

I can really appreciate your location with regard to an all out successful strike. I really think you would have a chance. Regardless of what anybody says I believe your intentions of going the lifestyle of the 1800s to be very valid and sustainable.

Being an avid student of history and being very familiar with the lifestyle of the Lenape, Susquehanna and Neshaminy Indians who once walked the same ground I do, I could very easily adapt if it wasn't for the fact that I will be the first to go.

Beth Dutton? I have to think about that one but I'm one of those who kind of... liked her. A little conflicted about that LOL.

The best laid plans...

We're combining multiple scenarios here in the discussion
One... A full blown nuclear war with a major power.
Two... A major EMP attack (i.e. 100 warheads as an EMP lay-down by Russia
Three... An attempt to hurt the U.S. by people that have limited means, like a partial EMP strike at 50-75Km or so in altitude and effecting one (maybe two if extra capable and ambitious) coastal areas.

I'm pretty sure that only in scenario 3 are precautions and preparation potentially helpful,

Considering resource constraints, radios may not be the top tool to protect, or it could be, depending on the individuals situation.

Thanks
Joel
