DHS is a very large parent agency and is an over-used phrase.

See if you can narrow down which specific DHS agency is might be.

I've been informed that the 340/670 NAC traffic I heard was DHS. I thought it was narcotics surveillance due to the content of the transmissions, but apparantly I was wrong? (See "FBI Traffic in NO AZ")

I did ask for clarification. Still awaiting an answer. The subject the agents were tailing was arrested for narcotics possession. It's only an assumption on my part at the moment, but maybe they were Customs agents tracking a smuggler.

The wide area VHF system in southern Arizona is mainly utilized by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), both part of DHS. You were most likely hearing ICE, as they do most of the undercover and investigative operations. CBP is mostly uniformed Border Patrol and Field Operations (what we used to call Customs).

While it's certainly possible that the FBI or DEA would be working on a combined agency task force or operation, the VHF wide area channels are not their primary radio system and they likely would only be using them in association with ICE.

Hope this helps...

Department of Agriculture most likely. The parent agency of the US Forest Service and others.

And thank you, ChrisP. Do you happen to know which NAC's breakdown to which agency/agencies here in Arizona? 310, 340, 670, and 710 specifically. Are there other's I haven't run across yet?

I do not believe the NACs are different agencies, but they are for different areas that the VHF wide-are system when they re-use some of the same frequencies. Some repeaters can be used as a "local" stand-alone repeater, and then can also be part of a "wide-area" group of repeaters that cover a larger geographical area. I think the different NACs come up depending on wether the repeater in question is being used local TAC channel or as part of a wide area channel.

I have not yet been able to decipher what NAC means what yet on the southern Arizona setup yet, but I'm logging as many of the active frequencies and NACs when I can. Keep an ear out for any clear transmissions when they say what channel they are on, like "Vote-Scan 5" or something similar...

Well, "Vote Scan 12" is 172.4125 with a NAC of 670. It covers from at least Phoenix to at least Flagstaff, on I-17. And it is one channel up from 173.9375 which has a NAC of 340. :)

Your master site
^ ^ ^ ^ It's in San Diego County area :) ^ ^ ^ ^
And to further clarify....NAC's from the VHF IWN network in SoCal shouldn't be posted to this thread since the NAC system put in place uses a sequential numbering format and aren't agency specific.

how do i find the scanner frequinces i see the nac codes but not the actuial frequinces like xxx.xxxx

The search button...

In this context, most people are using the NAC codes as an indicator to what agency might be using an unidentified or encrypted frequency. The frequencies themselves varies greatly depending on your location. The wiki is a good place to start, but 90% of the freq's out there aren't posted so a bit of research is often required.

162.000-174.000 and 406.100-420.000 are the two frequency ranges to search.
