To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The new Unication G5 I received earlier this week has firmware version 2.01 on it. I can't find any information about this firmware version on Unication's website. Does anyone know what might be new/changed in this firmware?

If I had to guess, I bet it primarily addresses new hardware(due to chip shortages) in more recently produced G4/G5s.

Yes, some of the newest G-Series Pagers are shipping with a new processor due to component shortages/changes. These units have firmware version 2.01 in them and eventually there will be a version available that will work with all the new units as well as the old units.

All units using the firmware version 2.01 will need to use the 4.0 PPS and will not be backwards compatible.

Is anyone using the new G5 as alerting pagers? My department just received our G5's last month. They came with this 2.01 firmware on them. I have a personal one that is 2 years old, along with one of the other firefighters on the department. The issue we're having is initial "tones" on our system is via a paging talk group on the MPSCS and are clear on all pagers. When we hit the button to listen to a tone out voice message, our personal ones play back clear, and are on 1.3x firmware. But doing the same thing on our new pagers the audio is garbled for first 5 seconds or so. It appears it may be a bug in this firmware.

Not a FW bug, but an issue with the new chip, which wasn't compatible with the old FW. That is why it wasn't issued to the general users , it isn't for the older models with the original chip.

I get that, but something is definitely "broke" between the new and the old, with voice message storage. So now my department has 20 new pagers, with the new firmware that playback garbled for the first bit of the recorded message. And the couple old personal ones on the older firmware, playback just fine. Just hoping they can fix it with a newer firmware release in the future.

We find this garble on the new G4N and G5N models. The garble only seems to show up when using a custom audio file for an alert.
The built in alert files do not do this on the new models. You might want to play around with different formats.

Another odd one with custom audio files...

I have two new G5's, with 2.01. I also have my Department G5, which has firmware 1.20. These both have our paging set-up on VHF, with the same custom audio file. What I am finding, is that they will both alert as they should, but the G5's with 2.01, the last second of the alert, is choppy, and cuts out. It still records as normal, just has the chopping ending of the custom alert. Has anyone else experienced this? I have re-written the code plugs, and re-downloaded the audio files onto the 2.01 G5's.

Thank you!
