Hey guys. Just got my general ticket and am looking to get an HF rig. As a beginner, im not ready to spend thousands of dollars, so i wont getting anything too extravagant. Im leaning towards a new radio, because buying used electronics (especially something like this) just makes me worry. If i find a good deal, i may be able to get over that though. I'd like to stick with a current model, but can probably flex a little on that too. Right now im looking at the Kenwood TS-480SAT and the Yaesu FT-450D. Does anyone have any input of either of those radios? Or maybe a suggestion for another radio in that general price range?

As a new ham, ANY AND ALL input will be appreciated! Thanks

I have no experience with that FT-450D, but I do have experience with a TS-480SAT. I have to think that the two are at least comparable. I don't plan on selling my TS-480 any time soon, it does as well as any radio I've ever owned and better than most of them. (I'm also a Kenwood fan, so keep that in mind.) I can't think of anything I've tried (mode) that it couldn't 'do' with the normal extras needed by any radio for those modes.
If there's anything I don't like about the '480 it's it's size. I think a larger radio with buttons/knobs is easier to use than one with menus. That's a personal thingy so doesn't really detract from it. If you ever use one mobile then that remote head is a big plus.
Absolute best advice is to sit in front of any radio before buying it. Play with it, see how you like it.
Have fun.
