I am trying to program this county
Scanner Frequencies: Jefferson County Trunking System, Birmingham, Alabama
into my scanner and have went through the directions for Motorola Type II SmartZone and I cant get it to work.
Right now all I need is ... Thanks!

My suggestion would be to ask for help in the Alabama forum. Surely there is someone there that can get ya squared away. :)

Use Freescan to save it from the 396T and then take it and upload it in the 996XT

Well, after scanning with the new and improved 996xt, I must say, I'm not impressed. My PSR600 picked up flawlessly, right out of the box. The local cities that used to come in perfect , now are not good. I have tried to tweak and tweak to no avail. I'm disappointent and very much so. The audio quality is great, better than the 600, but at the point that transmissions are broken up, I think I'd rather have the lower audio. I haven't changed anything, same antenna and location. Oh well.. Live and learn I guess. My 2 cents..

P.S.
Any idea's might be helpful...

I spent this evening carefully comparing what the 996XT does on 150-162 MHz VHF bands compared to what the exact channel allocations actually are frequency-wise.

This band plan effects user entered "custom search" as well as entering frequencies into memory channels manually. The radio's service search appears to be a set of separately configured individual channels using unique step sizes and those appear fairly accurate.

And most of the above band plan is pretty accurate and effective for most band segments. But there is (to me) a HUGE problem with VHF.

Even if you change the default band plan for the 150.8000-161.9950 segment from 5 KHz to 7.5 KHz you still won't be getting accurate "channelization" for many, many of the channels and services using VHF.

Send your info to Uniden and see what they say... Try to track down an actual tech there to email directly... Otherwise some support person will just file it somewhere.

Thanks... I'll check out both. One thing I won't do is buy from anyplace that charges $25-30 for shipping to the lower 48... and I see a number of those sellers. They "low-ball" the price and then hammer you with exhorbitant shipping charges.

I even saw one who wanted to charge me Florida State sales tax even though they operate and ship from another state more than 800 miles from Florida. Nice try....

About the only thing that I don't see that I would like is the ability to assign a system to more than one start up key. Not a huge deal, since there is so much memory. Still, it would be convenient not to have to load the same system with different file names. That would make updating much, much easier.

The BC-RH96 does not work with the 996XT so if you have your 996T set up in the trunk or under the seat forget this scanner working with the remote head. Its a false claim under features of this radio at Uniden and major supplier. I am sending mine back in the am. Its a great sounding radio but dangerous to operate from the floor board or lying in the passenger seat.

There is a firmware update that makes the RH96 work with both the 396xt and 996xt. If your only reason for sending a radio back is that you have not upgraded the firmware then that is not Unidens fault nor have they made any "false claims". Try updating the firmware in the BC-RH96 and I think you will find that this "great sounding radio" works with the remote head. :)

No false claim - just update your firmware.

OK folks I read all the posts about the new Uni. As some of you know I provide 4 feeds and one is down because of Pender County NC being on VIPER digital. I will eventually be in the market for a Digital, and want to hear what you the experts say is better. I can see looks, the Uni. wins. I hear everyone say sound wins it too. Only a few of y'all say the GRE picks up better. Are there several UNBIASED folks out there, who have owned both a while, and can say which is better at picking up faint signals in the 800Mhz range? How about ease of use? So to all you unbiased Uniden/GRE simultaneus owners, who can say which is better (I hope the 996xt.... cuz I like Blue! and if it has soooooo many features) please come forward. BTW I realize it's only been out a few months but to be sure someone has had it from the start. Thanks.

I generally try to stick to that rule too. Bearcat Warehouse is a place notorious for that, and I won't be burned twice (although they are extremely knowledgeable and have good customer service).

There are exceptions though. I just bought 4 BCD996Ts from CEI, who had the best price I could find anywhere, shipping included. When I got the invoice with the radios, it showed the shipping as $30 dollars each. I got no problem with that, since even after that, it was still the cheapest price on the web, from a reputable seller, who got them to me in two days.

I'm confused by this. Are you saying that despite the stated "Delivered Price" on their website that they tacked on $30 per radio on top of that?!? Or... are you saying that they adjusted the price of each radio so that, after adding the $30 "shipping", they totaled up to the quoted "Delivered" price?

One of the above would simply be an internal "accounting trick" while the other would be downright deceptive "bait and switch".

I think their prices include the $30 shipping charge. CEI is very reputable to deal with and their pricing is great. The only thing I don't like is that they will not ship to my work address. I can't stay home to wait for a UPS delivery. If you really want them to ship my work address they will, but they start adding on "processing fees" and add 4 days to the order process. I have never had those issues with other Scannermaster. It's actually less expensive to order from Scannermaster if I want something shipped to my work address.

I just purchased one from CEI. It is 499.95 total (that includes shipping). I hate their ordering system on their website and when I spoke to someone on the phone they were less than friendly. But I decided to still order them only because they were slightly cheaper than ScannerMaster and I wanted to order from them at least once just to compare the customer service, processing time, ect from the two different vendors. I will say that I had a UPS Shipment Notification email with tracking number less than 2 hours after I placed the order. My last order from ScannerMaster was shipped exactly 2 hours after placing the order as well but was a huge pain because for whatever reason SM left my apartment number off of the address portion. I had to drive across town and find the UPS man to get that scanner.
