FRS/GMRS use after an EMP

If a EMP charge is detonated, you are going to have far more important things to worry about than your radios!
Unless you can pack them in a lead container, basically they will become junk.

Yes, I know there will be a lot of things to worry about. The radios do figure into my survival plan as detailed in some of the earlier posts should have suggested. I'm trying to harden a container for more than my radios, as I also pointed out in an earlier post.

I'm looking for ideas on this as well as suggestions for basic survival of electronics after an EMP/CME type of event. I appreciate the suggestion of the lead box. Do you know where i can source one?

Yes, I have been watching too much TV and movies on the subject.

What if all the other people building faraday cages are putting Murs radios in them then you won't have anyone to talk, you need to think interoperability but seriously why worry about all of this ?

Worrying about an EMP pulse hitting is like watching grass grow in Phoenix, there are more important things to worry about.

Also you better put a nice folding solar panel in with the radios if you have rechargeables and if you use no rechargeable batteries you still need to periodically check them for charge state.

I'll assume that your going to put some radios in this cage and leave them there for some length of time, if you have rechargeable cells then you'll need to open it up and recharge them periodically or check your long term cells and what happens if the instant that you open it up to check your batteries is the moment when the EMP pulse hits, well then I guess your screwed.

Yes, I have a couple of Goal Zero folding solar pannels that are also going into the Faraday cage. I also have a good stock pile of LION AA and rechargable batteries to keep powering my electronic devices for a long time if a CME/EMP hits.

I do take the radios out and charge the batteries from time to time. I also rotate my stock of batteries as my family consumes AAs. I have worried about the fact that I might have my cage open at the minute an event might happen, but it is practically slim that it would happen at that time.

Once again, I'm not worried about talking to anyone else with the radios other than my immdiate family. The radios will be used as part of my survial plan as detailed in earlier posts.

I have some items put away for a disaster at home and where I work. Water food fuel for lanterns and flashlights. Rob way to go I would wonder how thick the lead would need to be. Well I don't know if I wish to die from radiation sickness or if I want to go right away. I'm more prepared for storm and tornado and if utilities are interrupted for 3 days.

My thought exactly... if there's an EMP, my focus is NOT going to be on playing radio.

What if that radio could save your life? In an EMP situation there could be no power, water, telephone, no transportation and you will be left with what little food you have left. Most likely there will be roving gangs, Martial Law and unsanitary conditions which will cause many diseases. If you have a radio you may be able to contact the national guard or the sheriffs department if they took the same precautions you did. What if you have people with guns trying to break down your door or someone gets sick. I would recommend something a bit more robust than a bubble pack frs. Maybe a Motorola or an unlocked wouxun. and an outdoor antenna. I would want a radio. And it wouldn't be for playing radio.

Do you really think a Wouxun, which in the durability game is very low on the totem pole, or a Motorola, which is high on the durability level, would really make a difference after EMP?

Maybe old tube style radios will work, or even better spark gap...

If you read the thread you would see that we were discussing faraday cages to protect the radios. So yes I think it could really make a difference. But I would like to add a few old tube type radios to my collection.
