Two to add:

This one is more of a non-scanner heard story but anyway:

One of our officers was on a traffic stop one night, and a new dispatcher was working one of her first couple of nights on her own... She called the officer on the stop and he advised 10-12 (standby).....well appearantly she had NO commonsense and actually stood up....when one of the other officers walked by the communications room, he asked her whats up......she told him she was just standing by...... Well, when the officer on the stop came back and requested a license check, her first reply was "Can I sit back down?" I dont think he was able to ever read the information off of the license cause he was laughing so hard....

And another:

An engine from one of the local companies was en-route to a house fire reported fully involved on Blah Blah street....well as the unit turned onto Blah Blah street, the officer asked central what the house numbers were....the dispatcher replied, go to the first house that is on fire, and put it out....

I gotta agree with that one, doesnt take toooo much sense to find a fully involved house fire...

Oh, or another non-scanner story (it's non-scanner, cause the local PD is digital and DES-OFB)..

Late one night driving down to visit my father in Niagara Falls, I stopped into a Tim Hortons (coffee joint) off the highway. I had my radio (MTS2000) on my belt when I went in. This one guy at the counter was eyeying it up and down, as well as me. Well, when I left the place, he ran past me mumbling something about "stupid mother-fecker". He was arguing with a female inside, so I figured they were just fighting or something equally as lame.

Well, I got in my car to leave, and this guy was RIGHT on my rear, flashing his brights and honking his horn. Well, I wasn't going to stick around to see what he wanted, so I took off. So did he. So I sped up. So did he. I got going a good 80kmph down a (normally) busy city street. So was he. He tried to ram me off the road by hitting my back bumper, but unfortunatly for him that didn't work (I saw him catching up, so I jumped on the gas abit...all he did was tap it). He tried to cut me off, but thankfully an old rust-bucket Ford pickup can't outrun a new GM car :p. At this point, after blowing numerous red lights, I called the cops, cause this guy was obviously out to do harm, either to me or someone.

I explained what happened already, where I was, and that I was driving directly to the closest police station (still about a 5 minute drive away). The dispatcher first went off to tell me "you have no authority to break traffic laws sir" I just piped back "well, you can have the officer write me up when I get there, but I'm sure as hell not slowing down for this guy". I told her I was flashing my lights and honking my horn almost non-stop so anyone on the road would get outta my way (thankfuly, there wasn't anybody around). Well, then she asked me "How will our officers identify your car sir?" hah. "Just tell them to look for the only car on the road doing 95 down Main Street flashing his lights and honking the horn."... She went silent, with only an "I see" comment. hah!

Anyway, end of story, the guy had stolen the truck, told the cops that he was planning on trying to steal my car to get away (!!!)...nothing more came of it.

But I just thought the dispatcher asking me how will the cops on the road see me was just hilarious....hah!

ROBOCOP

A deputy had just cleared from a noise complaint stating in a gruff tone that he had handled the problem for the last time...when dispatch acknowledged him...they had in the background.....a couple of females..probably dispatchers, shout out ...."oh boy mmmm my hero..go ROBOCOP go"
the deputy heard it cuz he said in even a gruffier (is that a word?..lol) sarcastic tone "10-9 you had background"

Another funny.....two deputies on tac

"1C21 to 1C26 on Tac"

"IC26 on Tac go ahead"

"whats you status bro?"

" I'm busy FIGHTING CRIME and SUPRESSING EVIL"

"do you need clergy?'

" Naaaaa...I stayed at a HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS"

Trooper: 34XX, Run a 10-28

Dispatch: G'head

Couple mins. later...

Dispatch: 34XX, Your return...

Trooper: They're parked on the west side. Just hold it, look at the registration, and page the owner and tell him his lights are on...

Gotta love it.

Funny things heard on the scanner

Officers in NE & SE parts of Washington DC here will refer
to bad neighborhoods & streets by odd names every now
and then just to be funny - though usually only on TAC and
surveillence channels. Two of my favorites are:

Capital Heights = cRapital Heights

Good Hope Rd. = No Hope Rd.

Anyone who's spent any time here should get it...

How about:

Super Auto (An auto parts store) = Stupid Auto

Grand Auto (Another one) = Grand Theft Auto

Ross, Dress for Less = Cross Dress for Less

Taco Bell = Toxic Smell

Hayward = Hayweird or Haywired

Berkeley = Berzerkeley

Vacaville = Wackyville (Theres a state "medical" facility there)

Oakland = Smokeland, Jokeland, Cokeland, Brokeland, etc...etc..

I could go on forever here.....

Myself on the scene of a MVC the other morning...

Dispatcher: 6167 can you 10-21 the station?

Me: Pocomoke it'l be a while, I am chasing a dog down the highway right now...

A little background on that: The dog was a passenger in the car when the car wrecked, and we called animal control...When they arrived, as the ACO lifted the dog into the truck, the dog slipped out of its collar and we spent an hour chasing the dog up and down the highway....I wish I had a camera when my partner started to slip on the snow as he was trying to put the cable around the dogs neck using one of those dog catcher tools....(dont know what its actually called)

Sometimes when I'm out flying around there is a local tower controller that likes to ask, "How will you compleate this landing?" Meaning Touch and Go, Full stop, or such. Well I've often thought of saying something there and finally the other day I heard it.

Tower:
6ND Runway 17L you're cleard for the option, How will this landing finish?

6ND:
Cleared the option 17L we'll finish it of with a crash and burn.

Tower:
6ND Say again, are you have problems?

6ND:
Negitive, I guess we'll just settle for a Touch and Go.

Hmmmm, in this neck of the woods, the pilot always specifies his intentions, such as "landing runway 17 - full stop" or "requesting touch & go, runway 35". Sounds like the pilots in your area need a little education in radio procedure. Our airport has a very active flight training operation due to the local university, so that may explain the more by-the-book operation. I'm sure it makes life a lot easier for the controllers.

I once participated in an exchange with Travis approach that went something like this.

App: Cherokee 376, traffic is at 3 o'clock westbound, unknown altitude, unknown type.

Me: 376 copy, I have all four of them in sight.

App: (In surprised tone) Confirm there are four of them?

Me: Affirm, four, looks like Citabrias in formation.

App: Roger, thanks. It'd be nice if they'd talk to me though.

Another time with Travis approach I was told to "make a left 180 for traffic", to which I replied "Roger, we'll throw on the blinker and pull a U-ey." The controller got an audible chuckle out of that one.

Man I miss flying, too damned expensive though.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many pilots on here. I better hurry up and get my private certificate so I can start making comments on the radio.

BTW, Sid I like the new avatar. But it's hard to see your face. The cruiser looks good though.

Mo, I couldn't do much better with the avatar pic since it's limited in size. Oh well.

And as for Ninja's, there are a few police departments out here who think THEY are Ninja's. Officers are trained with nunchuks instead of batons.
