1000 watt CB

Forget FRS/GMRS.....why not get a 1000 watt CB instead. From my travels up and down i-75, it seems as though no one needs any laws or licenses to run a rig like this. I just don't git it....

I would have no problems putting one in my vehicle and a base unit at home but I think it would be kinda hard to mount one in my wife's purse. :) Don't ya think?..Cheers...Keithmj

Get a hand-held one (like the cobra in my signature), it won't do 1000 watts, though.

Hi..According from what I have read the handheld Cbs won't get any better range than the GMRSs that I have unless you use a different antenna like a car top one. I just didn't want to spend that much for each one of them if they won't do any better. What range do you get with the standard antenna?..Cheers..Keithmj

Hello, I was just being sarcastic with my initial statement. A cb with 1000 watts is illegal here in the USA, but its so loosely enforced that a lot of people get away with it. I pick up CB'ers on interstate highways with an 800 mhz antenna!

To be honest, if you want range, your best bet would be to get your amateur license. Even the basic level license will get into equipment that can reach across countries with minimal setup (ie 6 and 10 meters).
The equipment many cost a few dollars more, but if you shop around you can usually get a really good deal on new and used equipment.

You'll be able to get into some very powerfull handhelds.

The test is fairly easy, is multiple choice, and you'll know the answers before you take it....I guarantee this...

If you join a club with a ham repeater, you'll be able to potentially communicate for miles (25-30 miles is not unheard off), with a hand held...in your basement. You too can setup your own...the sky is literally the limit. You can even use the Moon if you want.

I wouldn't even waste time or money optimizing on GMRS/FRS for long distance. It's adequate for malls, park like events, fairs, store fronts...etc but that's it.

Hi..I have two AudioVox GMRS-1525s and have been using them on the FRS but I applied for the license 3-17-2007 for GMRS, costing $85.00 for five years. My question is..Do I need to have my wife spend 85.00 for a license before I can talk to her? I figure at least we will have a license and she can just use my call sign..Also what radio would be a good one to get? I was looking at the 18 or 22 mile ones that Midland offers and this would just be for use now and then..Thanks for any info...Cheers..Keithmj

I recently picked up a set of Midland GXT650VP4 Outfitters for $70 on Amazon and am quite impressed with the clarity, range and battery life. I was able to communicate with my wife 2-3 miles away while she was in the car and I was standing in the house. We live in the Portland area.
