only the smaller port on the BCD436HP can be used, it is the serial port, it's the small rectangular port found on the upper port marked GPS that's ALSO found on the 396 series scanners, use the search function after you've re-read the whole post on this, search the forum and past threads. Take a special look at Post 36
I know how to use it, lol. It works flawlessly. I just want to streamline the wiring.

so why does @Scoop531 have a working modification? look at the pictures on page 3. instead of plugging into the back of the 536 with the db9 serial connector i want to plug into the gps port on the 436hp. it can be done.

The USB on the back of the BCD536HP is powered for the wifi dongle, the BCD436HP mini usb is NOT powered out, hence why there is no wifi dongle, the BCD536HP is powered with between appx 11.5v and 14.7v. The BCD436HP is powered from 3.1v to 5.2v though the GPS pucks only require 42ma.

Ah, I see your point. This is the disconnect in our communication. I do not want to power the puck from the handheld itself. Would be nice but I know that can't happen. I want to use my car's auxiliary USB jack to power the puck. Hope that makes more sense.

Just cut the 12V Cigarette plug off; then splice the 2 wires to a usb cable using correct polarity, Project done.

Thanks for bumping this one. I somehow overlooked this thread for the last 13 months. I was on the fence regarding $70-$80 GPS with clunky wiring. $30 and much cleaner wiring setup, and I'm all over it! Thanks for sharing!

Great thread! Just finished mine and it worked first try using the BWZY1227001 cable into the Uniden HP-1. I cut the end off the BR-355 GPS puck and soldered it to a DB9 male and also ran in a USB cable for power. All my connections are hidden inside the DB-9 shell and tucked away under the dash.

I have a HomePatrol 2 and two HomePatrol 1's in my car. I would like to connect them all to the same GPS puck. I purchased the same exact puck and Rosewill serial/USB cables (3 of them) that you have.
Can I just connect the 3 serial cables in parallel (1. Red, 2. White, 3. Black) to the GPS's leads (1. Black, 2. Green, 3. White) or will this screw up the inputs of the HomePatrols?

Thanks for this. I used your original wiring because I didn't bother reading far enough to realize you came up with a cleaner way. Oh, well. I got this GPS: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AMAJFUO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I got the Roswill cable you listed in your post. Wired it up, connected it to my 436 and it works perfectly! Thanks, again, for saving me lots of time figuring this out myself.

So Far Away....
what is the minimum input needed to enable GPS for the x36 series..
Im attempting 2 different ideas -

1 - my service laptop carries a GPS enabled card internally, using serial splitter
------im piping it out of my XFRD630's RS232 . SPlitting the data signal to both my
------Streets/trips for navigation & to connect the 436hp for Loc-based scanning

2 - I have a Magellan Platinum I carry as a GPS backup - I can also send the data
----signal out via its RS232 cable..tx pin #3

Both are TX'ing data in NMEA format..

OK...

On the scanner side, what is the radio looking for as far as an input signal,
the TX output from the source alone?...The TX output and the ground?

Both sources are powered. No input need in that regard.

If clarity is needed please let me know. Ill try to explain better, or provide
specific info asked.
