To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,

Is it possible to have a dedicated channel for GPS data, and a second channel for calling on NXDN digital conventional?

In our set up we have two NXR-5800 repeaters and several NX-3320 radios, we are currently using only one repeater for calling, and would like to use the other repeater/frequency for GPS. We would like the GPS to be as real time as possible. I have seen the GPS dedicated channel option in the trunking configuration but not in digital conventional NXDN.

Thank you.

Yes, it's possible.

On KPG-D3N:
You would need to make a personality for the second channel/repeater.
You would then go into System Personalities/System, NXDN tab and select your system from the system list.
On the far right side of the screen you will see "Data System Personality".
Set your new second channel there.

Next, go to the GPS tab.
Bottom right, check the box for "GPS Report on Data System-personality".

You then need to go in and set up your GPS, GPS settings, polling intervals, etc.

There's a few other details you'll need to decide about, like where you are sending GPS data, what format, etc. But that should get you started.

The other item about GPS,your real time is GPS on PTT, on the voice channel as well. Thou timing is the main thing, you don't want to have it every 3 seconds or you will kill yourself on voice traffic.
You can also use it based on movement as well (distance).

On the D3n management section ( where it shows you all radios programmed on the dat file)you can adjust GPS timing parameters for each specific portable/mobile on when to send GPS data.

Also if your data for GPS throughput will be faster if you use 12.5 kHz bandwidth( assuming you are licensed for12.5 khz on your data frequency)

Thanks so much for your help. I have successfully found the configuration options you stated. I will write the configuration to some radios today and do some testing.

Hi,

I've programmed the radio as mmckenna explained, I've also selected to send GPS data after moving 100 meters. I have noticed that when someone is talking on channel 1, and I'm listening, my radio does not update the GPS data (channel 2) while receiving the call. Is this the right way it should work ? I thought it would use channel two at the same time, something like a background process. I'm sure it uses channel 2 for GPS data since it is the only radio programmed to use the channel 2 repeater and it lights on the TX led when the radio sends the GPS data. Am I missing something ?

RIght, theres only one radio, so if it's busy receiving or transmitting voice, the GPS will wait until its free to switch to the second channel and beacon out your GPS location.

Hi, I have the GPS configured and working fine with the KAS20 software, however I have noticed something I would like to avoid but I don't know how or even if its possible.
Repeater 4: Is the data channel
Repeater 2: Is the voice channel

In the KPGD3 NXDN tab of the conventinonal system the data channel is selected as Data System-personality as per the instructions provided by mmckenna

I have configured one button on the radio to send the GPS coordinates on click.

As you can see in the attached video when the selected channel is the voice channel and the button to send GPS coordinates is pressed (from second 5 to second 7), something is transmitted first on the voice channel and then something on the data channel. When the selected channel in the radio is the data channel and the button to send GPS coordinates is pressed (from second 10 to second 12 and a second try from second 14 to the end), the two transmissions happen on the data channel.

I would like to avoid transmitting GPS related data on the voice channel. I don't even know why it uses the voice channel first and then the data channel.

In addition to what you have set up to send GPS data on the data channel, you have it set up for GPS polling. Is there something that is polling this radio?

A few weeks ago the KAS20 software was polling, but we turned it off, we are not interested in polling, GPS reporting on distance change is enough.
