It is always advisable to customize your display to show lat/long.
Then, you always know when you have a GPS 'lock' - or not...

If the GPS "puck" is not blinking, no GPS lock!

The GlobalSat GPS (referenced earlier) has the annoying blink. A small piece of electrical tape fixes that.
