I’ve use GPS in the past with my SDS200 while traveling the I-95 corridor from Ct. to Fla. and watch the scanner update itself when necessary. So, I know GPS works. But then I saw another menu option called “Use Location Control” and wondered if that feature would be advantageous while traveling locally. First, my understanding of “Use Location Control” is when the scanner is receiving a trunked system with many sites… thinking the scanner is looking for all sites (when none are Avoided) and simply skipping over those outlying sites that aren’t strong enough to be heard? This assumption on my part is probably wrong. But I turned on the “Use Location Control” and un-avoided all that may have been avoided within that trunked system. (Interesting to note that those avoided still show as being avoided, even after I asked for them to not be avoided using the global command to stop avoiding.) Can someone please explain what “Use Location Control” does? And why the global “Stop Avoiding” does not do what I thought it’s supposed to do?

No, it will try to scan what's in range of the scanners location based on where the scanner knows it is, and what range the scanner is set for. Nothing to do with reception or how strong a site is..

When I travel, I set my local fav list, as well as my NYC list to use location control. Then I use GPS with full database. When I leave my area, and my scanner knows I am not within the 1 mile of my home location, it stops scanning that list. Once I get thru NYC, it stops scanning that list. Of course everything I have in my lists is set to avoid in the full db. So basically I can used full db and fav lists while traveling with gps.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Use Location Control". I cannot find this setting in the menu of my SDS 200.

There is a "Location Control" in Sentinel, giving the options of Yes or No. This means whether or not you want the specific Favorites List to be on all the time (Location Control>No), or on when you are within Range (Location Control>Yes).

The only other thing I can think of is "Auto-Locate". That can be used to set your approximate location if you are monitoring a P25 system. The scanner will do some internal "magic" and set its location based on the P25 site you are hearing. It is not infallible however.

Pretty sure when he says "Use Location Control" he means Location Control set to yes, ie: using location control.

That auto locate thing is ok if your in a real jam. Other wise its much faster to google your locations zip code and enter it into the scanner. I have only used the feature 1 time when cruise ship was off the Florida coast and phone was dead.
