Not yet but will do... my "real job" has suffered today ;) I'll do some Pro-96/PSR-500 "side by side" too.

Great photos. Do you have any of the radio in operation? Maybe some active display pictures?

In brief side-by-side comparison with a BC796D, the PSR-500 seems slightly slower in picking up the start of a transmission. That could be a problem for very short transmissions. I freely admit that I haven't read the real manual yet, so I may be missing some tweak that would help that.
I noticed a similar "delay" when comparing to a PRO-97 on analog transmissions. I was playing with the "Special Global Settings menu (FUNC GLOB)" that's mentioned in the manual, and may have found something that might help (at least, it seems to help here).

If I decrease the "DG Int Prime" item in that menu, the PSR-500 can get very fast at picking up analog. If I go too low, though, some digital transmissions start giving me a nasty noise - like it's not decoding. The help text for that item says "Preselect DG audio", whatever that means, but its units are "time". Maybe it's some kind of timeout trying to decode digital? And analog is "muted" during the timeout?

Here's a GOOD tip - for channels that you KNOW are only analog, set them to tone search and it will always go right to analog. That delay bothered me too, and while Don's tweak can help - this is the real "fix"

It works for CONV objects that you know are only analog. It doesn't work for trunking - since there's no way to set a "tone search" on TGRPs.

I primarily listen to analog trunked systems, with a little bit of digital trunking and 1 or 2 digital CONV. For me, the "DG Int Prime" change seems to be the superior fix.

My "real job" really interfered with Win500 development time. I'm hoping to have something ready, even if it's only a "Light" version, by Monday.

I hate it when that happens to me ;)

Thanks Don! I'm looking forward to being able to use it.

My PSR-500 is supposed to be delivered tomorrow, provided UPS cooperates! I'll have all weekend to wring it out.

True - I guess I don't notice it in trunked systems like I do in conventional.

I _really_ notice it in trunking (MOT systems only), since that's about 99% of what I monitor.

Another tip: Rob's "set to tone search" suggestion works great for CONV objects that you know are analog. It works for digital, too. If you set a CONV object to search for a P25 NAC, it will _always_ force digital on that CONV object.

EDIT: the above discovered while trying to "break" the radio by setting a CONV object to P25 search, where the object's frequency was the same as the FRS radio I was using 3' away ;)

Ahhh, that may be the difference. My primary monitoring is EDACS (can't be digital), CONV and P25 trunked.

You guys suck!

Just kidding.

I won't have my scanner until early/mid next week. I know you guys are busy having fun, but keep the info coming.

That included cable and software are pretty cool:
In Windows Media Player...

(limited to 5 connections, and it won't necessarily be up forever)

Hey don - that's pretty cool ... is the "alternating color" of the PSR-500 screen image a feature of the scanner itself or is that just part of your efforts?

That's the GRE "demo app" showing me what the scanner's display looks like. When the background is green, the backlight is off. When it's orange, the backlight is on.
It "alternates" (blinks) if the active object has a setting of "Backlight: Flash".

As you guys find the errata in the manual, putting a wiki page up to document them would be a smart idea - if this thread gets really long, it would take too long to search all of them to find all the reported errors. Putting it in a wiki article keeps them in one place. That might be much more useful to a GRE analyst than random comments coming from all over. Just a thought...

I'm sort of mixed on that. The thread has a hand full of errors, mostly wording or spelling. The GRE America web site has a version 1.9 manual and the CDROM, version 1.7. It looks like someone must be updating the manual at GRE, so I'm not sure we need a Wiki for it. All in all, it a great manual, IMO.

Manual errors

The typos/errors that are being posted ARE IN 1.9. My feeling is that posting the things we find is not meant to be nitpicking (in most cases we can understand the intent of what was printed) but instead is intended as an assist to GRE and each other with the hope that a later version in PDF format will be posted.

Exactly. I'm just saying the thread is OK. I just don't think we need a Wiki for it.
