Not yet, but maybe soon. Looks like Win500 and PSR-500/600 Configuration Editor programs are coming soon.

Scott, did you try the RS800MHz antenna? Does it fit better than the stock antenna?

Yep, RS 800 antenna fits just dandy and as always works very nicely. Only seems to be the included antenna that is loose, and it's only a minor annoyance.

If you (and other new arrival people) haven't added the loose antenna vote to the pool thread please do. Thanks

I've been using the demo software to program it. With the exception of the alphabet, your PC keyboard works perfectly. For the alphabet, just use the mouse.

Is this not the neatest damn thing ever?

Finally! Full features with an excellent receiver. I feel like I'm holding a piece of equipment made by Thales or Motorola instead of a scanner.

:D

The 600 should be a kick in the ass.

Good point Rich, you can emulate the keypad via the keyboard.

I am interested in knowing more about this FLEXSTEP as well.

That's what I figured, why beat up the keypad if you don't have to. Then just do a "Recv from PC/IF", save the file and you're all set. It's not going to replace Don's software, but it'll work until it comes out.

I like the menu system with one exception. I'd love to see it scroll back around to the beginning again. Yes, I know that FUNC ^ takes it back to the top. I guess maybe I'm just being lazy.

According to the manual on Page 43, there is some menus, like the Scanlists, that "wrap around" when you reach the end. Here's an excerpt:

"A quick low-high wrap beep is played when the scanner reaches the last occupied ScanList and wraps back to the beginning."

So maybe what you want happens only on some areas of the menus?.....

I'm not finding the numeric keypad to be the most responsive ever. Am I just being too gentle with my new $500 investment or is anyone besides me finding that on occasion there is no response when pushing one of them.
I noted that as well. I started performing "data entry" within minutes of my radios arrival here in StL at 9:10 AM CDST on Thursday 10/18. I had been considering putting together a message/posting entitled "Impressions & Quibbles". That would have been one of the "quibbles". I ask myself if I am being too gentle and then worry that I am abusing the new unit. Rest assured the "quibbles" are minor and more reflect my impatience and lack of understanding than any shortcomings in this radio. I am most impressed

Battery Settings

I noted that there are different battery settings in the Global menu: Alkaline, NiCad, and NiMIH. It looks like it will effect the battery warning for low voltage level. So you may want to change it to match for the correct limits.

As usual, the yellow insert will charge batteries, the black will not. The warning says not to put Alkaline batteries in the yellow charge.

Use of the adapter could cause the batteries to overheat and melt the radio case or even catch fire.

Of course you could put rechargeable batteries in the black one, but they will not charge when the adapter is plugged in.:D

It will be interesting to see what length of battery life will come up.

GRE you are going to have radio coming back if you put so info out fast
how do i program this radio how about some instuction

Mike, what system are you trying to set up? I'm sure folks here can give you some hints. I found the setup VERY easy following the steps in the PDF manual.

Have you loaded the V-Folder for your area? That will give you a running start. Instructions (Step by step) are in the PDF in the v-folders section of the CD.

Have you gotten a few Conventional frequencies loaded?

The keypad is definitely stiffer than the 96's. At least the UI is a hell of a lot more intuitive than the Uniden's. I find the Func-SEL help coming in handy too for the GLOB options.

Received today VIA UPS direct from GRE in California (ordered through HamStation).

In the same case as the PRO-97. Volume and squelch knobs are larger and easier to use.

LCD screen is in the middle vs. the top like the PRO-97. Nice solid color and lighting throughout entire screen.

Scanner came in small black box with a USB cable, wall wart, black and yellow 4 AA battery cases, and short User's Guide which has instructions on how to get started quickly and lists the V-Folders installed.

Also included in the box is a demo CD with a demo application (controller) software, USB driver, Owner's Manual and V-Scanner data.

Scanner came pre-programmed with 20 V-Folder files for areas all over the U.S. File #9 includes North Texas, most trunked systems in the area (information source is Radio.Reference).

I loaded the #09 V-Folder into file #00 and immediately was scanning. Reception is exceptional, volume range is excellent, and the scan rate is very quick. Puts the BCD996T to absolute shame! Digital sound quality on the Grand Prairie system is exceptional.

Overall impression: WOW. Its a PRO-96 and 97 in the same case and pumped up on steroids!!!

Now the fun begins: programming!

Software is coming, don't worry about that...

Press PGM
Press F1:NEW
Press F1:TGRP

Select the scan lists you want the Talkgroup in (use left and right to select the number, then the SEL button in the middle to turn that scan list on or off)

If you have already created the TSYS (Trunked System) Object, select that on the TSYS line using the right and left arrows and press the SEL key. If you haven't created the TSYS object, select the NEW option and press the SEL key.

Set the parameters for the system you want to monitor (System type, tag, frequencies, etc.) and the press the F1:Save key.

Now set the talkgroup number, tag, and any other settings for the talkgroup and then press the F1:Save Key again.

You should now have the TSYS object, and at least one TGRP object for that TSYS object... Press Scan and listen.

Yes, you are doing something wrong. Take a break and start over then forget anythng you have ever learned in the past about banks or dynamic memory.

PROG (new)

ENT (conv)

start entering data

Hit scan or manual. You will see the new object there.

(of course that's grossly oversimplified but it's a point in the rough direction)

The part of programming that threw me to begin with was the default to scan list 1 and how to change it.

When you start a new object, the 'scan list' in the menu shows "*1"

Press the 'select' button to turn the "*" off.
Press the arrow (left or right) to move to the scan list number you want and press 'select'. The number will go from "#" to "*#".
Then continue entering data.

One thing I have started doing, especially for trunked systems, is this.

The second menu item for a new TGRP is TSYS. Even if I select NEW from the menu, I find some previous value in the TSYS location. If this occurs, press DFLT so the TSYS says "new".

I know that Don Starr has made a point of this when I posted this previously. See his post
http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showpost.php?p=629849&postcount=39

When I have NOT changed the TSYS value in the NEW TGRP menu, I overwrote the existing TGRP. Now I will admit as I look back, I don't recall whether or not I changed the TSYS name when I was adding a new system. I'll need to check that or have someone update this here.

Regardless, when I pressed NEW and already had a TGRP in existance, the one that was there would be overwritten if I didn't press DFLT to clear the TSYS value. So I am being a bit over cautious.

I've been reading through the manual looking for something and I just don't see it. But then, I'm blind in one ey and can't see out the other.

What I am looking for is how to fairly easily switch from scanning a trunked system with established talk group IDs (TGRP with specific TSYS) to scanning for all talk groups (the WILDCARD).

I know I need to have a wildcard TSYS, but I don't want this on all the time.

In radios like the 96, this would be an open or closed bank. Pressing Func-5 was the toggle.

Is there something similar, that I have missed in the manual, for the 500?
