So, did RS sell their patent rights to GRE? RS is out of the scanner business? Or, what is happening here? RS has contracted out to GRE for years
and those patents that were developed should belong to RS. Either that or GRE isn't stepping on any of RS's patents.

RS is not in the scanner business. All of their scanners are made by either GRE or Uniden and badged with RS model. Any patents are held by GRE or Uniden, not RS. RS probably has a copyright on the the name Pro96 or whatever model number, but that is it.

I thought RS was contracting GRE to make their scanners? Not so? GRE is just using RS to sell their scanners? It looks to me from these new scanners that GRE is moving away from RS, and these new scanners will be available not just from RS but Ham outlets also just like the Uniden
scanners. Who knows what the contracts are? Lets keep the thread moving.

As usual, someone started two of them PSR-500 and PSR500, both have less than 2 members. I'd settle for a GRE forum in Radio Reference.

many of the RS stores around me only carry the cheap models of scanners. they don't want to tie up money in inventory with slow moving items like scanners. If you go in the store they will specail order a Pro96 and you can pick it up at the store in a couple of days. I'm sure RS lilke any other retail can buy the scanners wholesale and sell them. Just like with cell phones.

Just got back from a great weekend at Dayton. This was my 10th one and the PSR-500 was a really big surprise.

Got to look and handle one of the two prototype PSR-500s that were available for show.

GRE President, GRE Chief Engineer, and CRE Manager of U.S. sales were visiting several of the dealers during the weekend.

FCC type testing is to start in June, with scheduled delivery in October - we will see if we have an early Christmas.

Now a summary of my observations...
(Believe me, my head was spinning with lots of questions).

Object oriented scanning - going to be different that the dynamic memory hierarchy of Uniden. Objects are either trunked talkgroups or conventional frequencies - then you build whatever systems from their.

The LED up top - 8 different colors, plus blinking option and LATCH option
The LED is tied to each object (talkgroup or frequency) so you can color code the objects:
Police talkgroups/frequencies can light up blue, for instance.
Fire could be red... and so on.
You can make them steady, or blink
For LATCH, the color of the last received object stays on until reset.

Trunk-tracking:
Motorola Analog (VHF, UHF, 800Mhz, 900Mhz)
P25 including 700Mhz
DO NOT KNOW ON THE NEW 380MHZ Fed band
EDACS Narrow, EDACS Wide, SCAT
LTR Regular

Motorola Smartzone systems
Scanner option to look for the site with the best received CC decode rate.
Not the same as RSSI on the Motorola rigs, but similar in operation.

P-25 Conventional
Can be programmed for NAC (Network Access Codes), or to search for these.
Finally, conventional frequencies can be programmed to P-25 mode only.

Did not ask about Tone Lock-Out (as on the Unidens)

SKYWARN Function
Can be programmed with any number of objects
So one could program in the 2-meter Skywarn and the EMA talkgroup for the SKYWARN group.

A "Home Set" which basically lets you create a scan list/group tailored to your favorites.
One button operation to get to this set.

UNSQUELCH Delay
This may be of some interest to LTR Passport monitors!!!
Although the unit WILL NOT trunktrack LTR Passport, there is an option to provide an Unsquelch delay before the radio unmutes - this could be programmed longer than the 500msec LTR chirps so you'd never hear them.

All three GRE representatives took note of continued desire for LTR Multi-Net, LTR Passport, Provoice, and even MPT-1327. We'll just have to see.

Yes, Don Star will be providing the software.

The menus always have a "Default Option" key so if you accidentally screw something up, you can reset just the individual item back to a default value.

Overall - very impressed and impatiently awaiting release of this new toy.

Thanks for the detailed information. I have to say, if this scanner did come out with MPT1327, I know many would be interested. Particularly those in the UK and Europe. I really doubt MPT1327 will be included though, but I would definately be purchasing one of these if it had this without the slightest doubt.
