GRE Overloading

brandon said:
Wow this radio looks impressive. I just hope they fixed the problem with overloading because the current GRE digital scanner cannot be used in mobile environments as it overloads when coming within 1/2 mile of a cellular tower.

I don't have this problem either. In fact, I work for a cellular company and often listen to the scanner inside of cellsites while I work. If anyone was going to have a problem with overloading from cell towers it would be me and I have not had any problem whatsoever.

No way of knowing how they perform but I wished the handhelds didn't look like bricks. :(

What DO you want them to look like? Hockey pucks?

Personally, I like the more old-fashioned rectangular brick style. A lot of the newer rounded off electronics don't stand up and look like something the high school girls would carry around.

Exactly--I have no issue whatsoever with the Pro-96's size (that's right about perfect IMHO; these littler radios look too darned fragile to me :D).

Then again, I also used to be just insane enough to use a large fanny pack to carry around a Pro-2067 and a battery pack at races... :D

After using my 396 in my shirt pockets, the 96 is just sooooo bulky. I will admit the audio power is better due to the increased speaker size and voltage.

From the picture the case style is smaller and more the size of the RPO-97 or a little smaller, and it's not exactly Hello kitty style :)

I think N4VOV hit it on the head. GRE I think does hold the patents and FCC T/A for their units, and RS only owns the names (such as PRO-96) and trademarks (such as Signal Stalker) and exclusive sales rights to those specific models made for them.

All GRE is doing is selling models based on their design (which is theirs, and not RS's).

Yes, RS had specs for their scanners and demanded that of GRE, but it is still GRE's design. Just like the government telling GM they want a vehicle that meets certain specs, and the MFR makes it. The MFR still holds the design patents even if the original concept was that from a third party.

I also think GRE has sold scanners previously.

A better example: The PRO-XX Race Scanner vs the Uniden OEM model Race Scanner (I forget the exact model offhand). There are slight design variations, but Uniden still owns the design.

I thought RS was contracting GRE to make their scanners? Not so? GRE is just using RS to sell their scanners? It looks to me from these new scanners that GRE is moving away from RS, and these new scanners will be available not just from RS but Ham outlets also just like the Uniden
scanners. Who knows what the contracts are? Lets keep the thread moving.

I'm holding my Pro-96 now and from that picture the PCR500 looks to be the same size as the Pro-96.

Yep, Radio Shack has the Signal Stalker trademark. They use it for the Uniden OEM version of Close Call and for GRE OEM as Signal Stalker II. That would explain why the new label is "Spectrum Sweeper", sucking up those near field frequencies :)

As I recall, the FCC Cert TA was GRE not Radio Shack for the 96/2096.

The Uniden OEM PRO-83 and PRO-84 Race Scanner were TA as the PRO-83, no additional TA was needed for the 84.

Even better!! If it is going to be that price, it'll still be cheaper than the Uniden scanners....I smell some competition a brewin'!!!!

I beg to differ. The 396 comes with charger, batteries, programming cable and software. When you add all of that up, the Pro-96 costs WAY more.

With any luck, the new GRE scanners will include the above mentioned items.

I didn't have a camera, and didn't actually see any of the prototypes. :-(

For those who didn't catch your earlier reference:

I find the Radio Shack logo interesting. I have to wonder how that came about IF RS was not part of the development. My guess? RS will be selling GRE and Uniden OEM scanners (or at least GRE).

No camera? :)

The logo "had" Radio Shack on it, now it won't. I'll be surprised to see it in any Radio Shack store. Maybe available as "web only". If GRE will silkscreen the dealer name on it, then it may be interesting.

After a quick look at the scanning ranges and gaps, I notice none of them cover the 70MHz band. This is really dissapointing. I don't know why they have ommited this band range, there are quite alot of activity on those bands in some areas/countries particularly the UK. I guess there is always something not quite right but this is something else.

Deleted post, I misread the 70 for 700..... duh

EDIT: Maybe there will be an "Extended Frequencies" selection with the programming software similar to that in Win96 that would open up those freq. but who knows...

I think Don is trying to do everything by himself and needs a little help when customer service is required.

I was saving up to buy a 396, but now I'm going to wait it out. With the addition of 700mhz and updatable firmware, the new GRE models will ROCK. The audio Quality is superior, even on the older models. Bring on the Brick's :)
