Hello everybody, I just signed up for the HamStudy App on my phone. I see that it has test questions, but is there a place within the app that I can find radio theory and just more knowledge in general about antennas and radios.

My wife has given me permission to spend what we consider is a sizable amount of money for this hobby on a better radio and antenna. I want to make sure I know what I’m doing before I flush a money down the toilet.

That is what prompted me to sign up for a study program to get my technicians license.

I do not wanna just pass the test and have my license and not know what I am doing. I would like to have some background and be more well rounded about radios and antennas.

Is there a different study guide I should be using. Or am I just not looking in the right spot in HamStudy?

Thank you

Study with the ARRL license manual, and you will get the foundation you need.

Use Ham Study. as well as similar testing apps, to get the confidence you need to take and pass the exam.

Most of what you "learn" will come after you get the license...

I commend you for approaching this the correct way. In my area we have had numerous people "pass" their technician exam only by memorizing the questions and the answers. Then we never even hear them on the air because a majority of them can't even figure out how to program their radio. I got my technician license the same way you did. I studied the theory and I'm better off for it. After all this is a technical hobby.

Yes it does seem the smart way to go. I am getting the book another poster recommends and after that has been read I will test and the take the plunge on a new radio and antenna

I like the “No Nonsense” manuals by KB6NU to study for the exams. We old timer hams do have to do more to help elmer (mentor) the newly licensed hams. Too many times I have heard “Welcome to the hobby.” Unfortunately it seems to be famous last words. I can only suggest to a newly license ham, please do not give up. There actually are older hams who can help you. But sometimes we are hard to find. Get involved with your local club, and keep asking questions. The club that grows new hams, lives.

Others have recommended the ARRL study guides. They're comprehensive, but I've found them to be very dull reading. Personally, I like Gordon West's books. They're as comprehensive as the ARRL's, but West's writing style is less formal and more enjoyable to read.

I will also strongly recommend David Casler's (KE0OG) Ham Radio Answers (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaBtYooQdmNzq63eID8RaLQ). Dave is a prolific poster with a wide variety of videos about ham radio and electronics. He also has a specific set for each license class. He hosts a live show on Saturday mornings where visitors can comment and ask questions in real time.
