• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

This has been rattling around for a while, finally released at IWCE:

L3Harris Technologies today announced the XL-300P, the company’s latest P25 handheld that also supports 5G connectivity and satellite direct-to-device (D2D) service in an effort to provide first responders with multiple layers of redundancy in their communications.

No photos in the article. I've heard that it looks similar to the XL-200. I'll try to snap some photos this week and post them here.

Yeah, I saw that on the other site. Looking forward to seeing one in person.

I'm close enough to retirement that I'm pretty sure I'll never own one of those. But I can see this being a big step forward for some applications. We all knew this was coming, here it is.

I still have many years ahead (only 15 years in)....Please post any pics that you are able to get as, on our system, we are always looking at all options for the future. Yes we are a Moto core with 95% Moto radios but we are always looking at all vendors to see what might be best for the future.

Does it also do DMR? This would be a good opportunity for them to move into the multi-mode space. I do realize this is highly unlikely.

DMR is dead in the public safety space. The name of the game is selling subscriptions, and entitlements which generate revenue streams which BTW, L3 Harris is doing exactly that. Now you can not own your XL radio and lease it in true American enshitification style, how innovative. Rather than actually owning a flagship product, why not just rent it?

Not sure how I like the new keypad
Trying to squeeze a d-pad, soft buttons, and full numeric keypad into a fairly small space results in it being really fiddly especially with gloves. I only order limited-keypad radios for that reason. We're not a Harris operator but this might be a good ergonomic decision even if it looks odd.

I agree, too many buttons on the full keypad XL200 as it is. We use the limited keypad for our officers, and it's still plenty.

How did the UI feel, did the radio seem laggy at all?

It only had one zone with a few channels in it, so not much to try. Seemed OK, but I'd want to program it with more than that to see.

Also go take a peek and snap some photos of the new viking control head.

I did. Forgot to take a photo, but a photo of the glossy sheet is here:
