First, another thanks for Unitrunker. Been scanning for over 20 years. This is an amazing new area that I have waited too long to get into. Received my PRO-97 back from www.dataslicers.com today. Hooked her up and in 60 minutes have found 20 TG's that the database has never listed. Now to identify them...
Want to use my 396 as the second scanner to follow traffic. How do I get this to work?
Went into listen, changed to yes and listed the 396. What settings am I missing to get it to follow and what does the 396 need to be set to? (Have it scanning the system, set to the control channel, on a manual setting?)
Have the OEM data cable hooked to the serial port and the radio is scanning the sytem.
Can't seem to get it to follow.
The help file with the program is a little vague in this area.
Thanks

Yes, you need to set the 396 up as well.

Settings>PC CONTROL> then make sure this setting is the same on unitrunker.

Then set up unitrunker receivers - make sure you select the correct serial port etc and that the baud rate as mentioned above is set correctly.

You will have best lucky running your tap directly into your sound card and then using your OEM cable into the 396 out of one of your serials. I could never get it to work using the dataslicers slicer.

I've done all of the above. What should parity, data, and stop bits be set to.
If Unitrunker is controlling, will the delay still be on between moving on to the next TG?
Right now, it seems to just be scanning as normal.
Should the bank be in search instead of scan?
Until I know it's controlling the radio I won't set the "ignore TG's".

To troubleshoot control of the second radio ... run the tuner program. As for serial port settings ... 8 bit data, 1 stop bit and no parity ... usually work with most radios. Once you confirmed settings with Tuner ... duplicate those settings in Unitrunker.

Doesn't he need to set whatever TGs he wants to listen to to "Listen Y" also?

I have run Tuner, but not sure what the net result should be. I'm pretty sure the programming cable is using COM1, when I open Tuner it only shows drop down of COM2, or COM3. If I run Tuner successfully, what should it be showing?
Also, I have set the option in the (R)eceiver screen to yes for listen. When tracking, ate the Groups defaulted to yes for listen? If not, that may be the problem.
1 more-if I have the system I'm tracking set to System Key 5 and have Unitrunker control the 396, do I need to have that bank enabled?

Thanks again for the help and an amazing program.

If your not 100% sure which COM you are using try this

Control Panel >System>Hardware>Device Manager - then scroll down to verify which COM port your OEM is plugged into.

Run the program ... connect to the radio ... type in a frequency and click the "tune" button. If the radio jumps to the frequency ... you're in good shape.

Tried again and I'm not getting connected for some reason.
Looking at my COM ports, it looks like I have COM port 1 on the PC, but Tuner only has COM2 and COM 3 as drop down options.
Think I may have COM port issue-anyone know how to re-number or add a COM port through the WIN98 settings? How can I tell if some other piece of hard/software is utilizing the existing COM port?

Does the baud rate under (R)eceiver have to match the baud rate of the the COM port or the baud rate of the scanner (396) I want to control?

Darn, I knew I should have taken those IT classes back in the 80's;-)

Your Com 1 is not available in this case. As I recall a dial up modem will normally use Com 1. Set your 396 to Com 2 and run tuner.

Yes, baud must match.

-You cannot set the COM port on the 396, and to clarify, I only have 1 serial port on the PC.
-Must match what? The rate on the 396 or the rate that the port runs off(9600)?

You were attempting to run tuner and indicated only com 2 and 3 were listed in the pull down. I stated to set the 396 to Com 2 (meaning the pull down). Surely you have the 396 hooked to the one serial port which is only listing either coms 2 or 3 available.

You can set the 396 baud (I would think so anyway). Have it match whatever you've set the receiver settings to in UniTrunker. Also, default 8, 1 and none usually works.

1331: are you running UniTrunker and Tuner at the same time?

I had a problem like this which I believe resulted from trying to run Tuner at the same time as UniTrunker. I first tried getting the radio set up in UniTrunker, and when that didn't work I resorted to Tuner. But it seemed as if UniTrunker seized that com port so it wasn't available to Tuner, and the fix was to quit all the way out of UniTrunker.

I'm still not able to get Tuner to control any of my radios (Opto, 246, 780, 898; I'm still exploring different setups before I bring the problem here) so the above "fix" may not really be one.

I have attempted to use COM2 and 3 on Tuner to get it to control, no luck.
I have also set the baud rate between the 396 and the Unitrunker setting.

How about an idea on how I can tell if something else is attempting to use COM1 on my PC?

I'm thinking about going into the COM port settings and deleting that COM port. From my understanding, when I reboot the PC the port will re-establish. True?

I have used this PC in the past to program various radios with UASD software. So I know the serial port is functional. There has to be a conflict somewhere.

Windows will re-discover the port on boot up. If there's a program that grabs this port ... fax modem, voice mail software, blackberry or other PIM or cell phone address book sync manager, they may be set to run at boot-up AFTER windows has restored the port ... in which case you've accomplished nothing. Windows might also re-discover and rename your port to something new ... causing more confusion.

Run your UASD software again. Does it still work? If it uses COM1 ... then UniTrunker must also use COM1. If it works ... exit the program and run UniTrunker ... that should work.

As a last resort you can run a program called "PortMon" that may be able to tell you if there's another application

I am having a problem trying to get my 396 to work as a receiver. It displays PC Control (or whatever the 396 displays) when UniTrunker is on, but I hear nothing from the scanner or the PC speakers. I can hear audio from the scanner when using Tuner. I am able to change the volume, freq, etc., so I know the settings are right.

In the "Receiver" screen, I entered in the same values as Tuner. I am unsure what to edit in the "Listen" menu. I've tried several settings and nothing seems to make it work.

Any ideas?

Good.

I'll assume from the subject line that you are using a two radio setup (eg. the '396 is not providing discriminator audio). Don't worry about setting Listen or Ignore on talkgroups or radio ids; we'll set the Listening options to ignore the per-talkgroup and per-radio id settings to validate operation. Afterwards you can go back and tighten things up to suit your needs.

Go to the Listen menu and fill out the following:

Listen: said:
Listen voice [Yes] control [No ] mode [Auto] ...
Scan for Listen=[Ignore], Threshold < [ 50] or ignore [Yes], Lockout=[ignore].
Park mode [Auto] use [Frequency] Frequency (Mhz) [ 121.50000 ] Memory [ 0]

To paraphrase the above in plain english, you want the radio to follow voice calls, but don't return to the control channel at the end of call (appropriate for a two radio setup), mode is Auto (let the radio choose AM vs. NFM based on frequency), ignore the listen flag, ignore priority (threshold), ignore the lockout flag, at the end of each call park the radio in Auto mode (let radio choose AM vs. NFM when parked) on frequency 121.5 Mhz.

Awesome! Got it working. Man, I like the numbered priority.

Thanks Rick for another awesome release of UniTrunker.
