396 xt upper band and polarity

hey dannb i had the same problem with my new 396 xt last week also it drove me nuts for a couple days trying to figure it out what you have to do is take the lower band plan number and the offset and the spacing numbers and calculate them up somehow to get the upper band plan number its really hard to calculate it my wife helped me with mine and someone in here gave me the numbers for mine also being im not too good in math but if you put the disc in the computer and bring up the manual and click on where it says programming youre scanner and then click on where it says setting up systems and if it is a motorola system click on motorola trunked systems then scroll down the page until you see where you can click on edit band plan click on it then click on creating a custom band plan scroll down a little bit and you should see a click on where it says calculating upper base frequencies try that and that should show you how to add it all up but it is not easy there is also a click on part in there where it says click here to download a spreadsheet and it will do the math for you but that was even hard to use so i had my wife add it up for me and asked some people in here for it and the polarity thing in there when setting it up i think that is a setting for either the repeater or the control tower its the way the scanner scans it when i set mine up after the band plan i just set it up as the plus first and tried it that way and if that didnt work i would reverse it but it did work for me so i left it as that but im not sure about that feature how it definetly works but hope everything i told you helps Danny...

Make it easy on yourself and use the FreeScan software to program that radio. It calculates the upper for you.

Or, as I have helped others with in just the past few weeks, grab FreeScan from ScanNow.org - The Home of FreeSCAN! & then get my latest data file from the 'programming' sticky at the top of the NJ forums here.

I have almost every single TRS in NJ programmed in my 396XT (because of the way I travel for work) & confirmed.

Even if you don't use my data to load your units, you will see the proper settings & types of system layouts needed to make the scanner work on NJ systems. The biggest issue I still come across is people programming the digital Motorola trunk systems here in NJ as 'P25' systems.

The only P25 systems in NJ are:

Jersey City
Bayonne
Mercer County
Manchester Twp

As far as I'm concerned, Ewing Twp. does not even justify being listed, as it's 100 encrypted...
