I am brand new to this and I am trying to hook my computer to my new Uniden BCD996P2 Scanner. My computer is Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I have tried to add the drivers that I found on the Uniden website. I am sure it is something I am doing wrong but any help would be a big help. Also I have watched video's of people programing using the computer and it looks easier that way. Is that right? Thanks for your help

plug the cable in, does the computer make the device connected sound?

go to device manager, look thru the USB devices. does it show any yellow triangles that show as unrecognized devices?

not telling you what to do, but why haven't you up graded to windows 10 ? it has the drivers you need already. also please be aware of buying off brand cables. alott of them are pos.buy cables from the manufacture of the scanner only, if you can. as for software you should try out free scan, its free. just go to freescan.com ive been using it for many years. good luck, have fun and welcome to the hobby.
