Herkimer County Fire Channel 4

Whenever I'm monitoring a fire call in Herkimer County, I often hear them say all units go to channel 4. I assume that is Fire Tac 4, 154.280mhz as listed in the RR database. I have that programmed into all of my scanners, but I never hear anything come through. Is it just because its mobiles on the scene with a shorter range or am I missing something entirely?

That is a simplex fireground channel so it is primarily portables and maybe some mobiles. You would need to be very close to the scene to hear the portables.
