Highway Police - AWIN

I was travelling through AR last week and heard a HP unit on TGRP 3203 (Dist. #1 Dispatch). He had stopped a vehicle on IH 30 in Saline Co which is in District #6.

I travel through several times a year and have never heard an out of district unit talking on another district's TGRP. Has anyone noticed this? I didn't catch the unit number so I don't know what district he was actually assigned to.

Arkansas Highway Police (AHP) are full time on the AWIN system now, They have 5 different talk groups that are all answered by dispatchers in Little Rock. I don't think they are restricted to talking on any particular TG, I think it probably depends on what part of the state they are in at that time, and they are known to travel to different parts of the state at any given time. So hearing a dist 1 unit on dist 6 TG is not that uncommon. I know as an ASP dispatcher if we request an AHP unit for a truck accident/incident, sometimes they have to send a unit from as far away as 3-4 counties.

Okay. I was going to change my scanner set up to monitor just the district TG's I was travelling through at the time. Sounds like I will just be leaving things as they are. Thanks.

Those were the days! Sounds like you are a little older than me but I too remember the days of "skip" and enjoyed listening to those far away stations! I still do when the band is open!

I am still trying to figure out why they don't just use 1 (or 2) TG's statewide.
It's not like they service 30-40 units at any one given time, 5-10 at best!

Those were the days! Sounds like you are a little older than me but I too remember the days of "skip" and enjoyed listening to those far away stations! I still do when the band is open!

This wasn't skip. It was pretty consistent. The line of sight distance was probably 150 miles or more but Lo band travels farther, plus the high antenna I had.

I remember when Jonesboro Troop C dispatched on 44.620 back in the 80's. That radio would blow us out over here in Missouri.

I know, I Struggle And Struggle To Hear The Newport Dispatch State Police Office Now, I Have to have an outside directional, In the past on the old 800 analog system I could hear them outside on my handheld but not inside or with a mobile antenna, Low Band Was DA BOMB, I could have heard them easy then! Let's Bring That Back!!! LOL

I am beginning to think the AHP Districts are numbered differently than the AHTD Districts. Because of the hills in this area, they usually contact the Franklin Co. SO when running license and warrant checks. That appears to be more reliable in this terrain. I have heard 4 different units in the past 48 hours on the SO frequency and all are 3##. I believe I am in AHTD District 8 (but don't bet on the accuracy there). Headquarters for the district is in Ft Smith, I know.

So, maybe they have their own way of numbering the districts or the district layout might be one of their own design.

Just a thought.

And talking about long-haul signals - the Logan Co Fire channel is consistently picking up a strong 5X5 copy of the Rocky Mount, MO fire department, 75 miles north of Springfield! I listened as they dispatched first responders to the Rocky Mount Roadhouse Restaurant for a cardiac the other day. In broad daylight. Had a call on a garage fire the other night and I listened to the whole thing like they were just down the road. What would that be, 150 air miles from the repeater in Paris, AR? I am thinking 150 at least. I imagine the folks at Rocky Mount FD are not even aware of this.

Yes, AHP Districts ARE Different the AHTD Districts. This is a fact.. The Logan Co. Fire channel picking up.. Is this a low band channel?
We have one here on our fire channel that picks up the Bolivar MO SO all the time, It's like 190 miles NW.

155.955, VHF highband. And Bolivar is 40 miles south of Rocky Mount. I don't think this is because of skip conditions.

Makes sense to me. I am AHTD Dist 4 and AHP Dist 3.

Makes me wonder now where the "District 6" listed on AWIN is located.

Thats pretty wild. I can't find any transmitter in their area that is licensed on 155.955 or 154.965, which is what I show for Logan County. Am I looking for the wrong frequency?
