I just got one of these and would like to get the upgrade but I don't know how or where. There is a seal on the Uniden site that mentions it but when I click on it the browser sits and does nothing.

OK thanks. I got the key now need to figure where it goes to activate it.

If You Purchased the Extreme Upgrade

Be sure you've updated the HomePatrol-1's firmware following the above steps.
On your HomePatrol-1 select MENU --> Advanced Menu --> Advanced Option --> Register Advanced.
Enter the registration key provided when you purchased the Extreme Upgrade, including the hyphens.
You can retrieve your key by logging into http://my.uniden.com and selecting "All My Scanners."
Download the latest HomePatrol-1 Extreme Owner's Manual by clicking HomePatrol-1 Extreme Owner's Manual.

Get it from Uniden. I did and it's seemless. Also when my original HP-1 had a hardware issue almost out of the box, the shop I bought it from swapped it out and Uniden transfered the Extreme update to the new scanner.

Keep in mind all the units already have the software to perform the functions, the extreme "update" is simply unlocking the advanced features in the software.

I believe the Grove price is for those that are purchasing the HP1 from them- and they do the upgrade before they ship it to you.

The extreme upgrade process is simply entering the registration code into the HP-1. There is no download or install of software, the software is already there. The code simply unlocks the advanced features. To pay $25 more for someone to enter a code into your unit for you? I wouldn't pay the extra.

I finally pulled the trigger two weeks ago and have not regretted it! My favorite find was the ability to gauge performance of the various antennas I have.

I'm not defending Grove, but I think you should re-read what they are offering for $24.95:

Price includes the Grove HomePatrol Upgrade Service
  • Download and install the latest firmware from Uniden
  • Download and install the latest database from Radioreference.com
  • Install and charge the batteries
  • Install your zip code for local reception
  • Test the radio for proper operation

Granted, an experienced scanner user or even one just coming up to speed with the HP-1 could probably do all those things themselves. Grove just found a way to make a few bucks from the folks who prefer to have others do things for them.

I still personally wouldn't pay $25 for that. Updating the firmware and Database are simply a click of the button, installing batteries are a no brainer. Entering a zip code is simple and it's a new unit, shouldn't need to be tested. Sounds to me like it's a way to increase revenue. Good on them, but I don't see the value.

Add to that the fact that one of the 2 largest components of what they provide, the user will be doing weekly on their own anyway.... yup... no value for me.

No need to re-read it. In fact, the more times you read it, the more ridiculous it seems.

They are charging good money for things that are incredibly simple, and are more than adequately explained in the owners manual and other places that are available to a potential owner before making the purchase.

Regular updates on the firmware and database would need to be done by the end user anyway, as well as regular charging of the batteries.

I realize some people really hesitate to tackle things themselves, but "buyer beware" is always necessary, and it's not like there is a lack of documented information out there, there's lots of it.

These days, it's easier than ever to "do your homework".

This question from another HP-1 user has gone unanswered on the Uniden's own boards for about a week. I'm interested myself, so perhaps someone here can answer it"

"Haven't order "Extreme" (yet!), but wondering if you are actually able to hear any traffic when various Extreme functions are running or if you are simply getting visual information. The manual if not very clear in that area. Thanks for your help."

Not all "extreme" functions pass audio...im pretty sure the discovery modes do but the system analysis modes do not...band scope does not pass audio when scanning but does when paused on "found" frequency. That is all I can recall right off hand.

KD8HE's correct. The other features like trunk system analysis (similar to Unitrunker/PRO96COM/etc) also don't pass audio.

I got mine Direct from uniden! it's bad enough uniden charges $100.00 bucks for something that should have just been a typical upgrade! ( but thats my rant so we'll leave it at that), as far as what groves is offering to do for you is rubbing salt in the ol wound!
getting the HP up and going is pretty easy if you have computer skills, I have windows 7 and had to install a program called 7zip to get it to work, but there are plenty of help on this forum if you get stuck!
