Yes, the files are written by MacOS... no matter how your Mac touches a folder, whether directly attached storage or via shared SBM or CIFS, it will write them.

A tip to those who care about such things.

Mavericks introduced support for SMB 2 protocol but it is written by Apple and it is buggy. It will give lots of problems. To force SMB1 you must use CIFS:// when mounting remote shares via SMB. CIFS will use the older driver which is much cleaner.

Thanks. The only reason I asked is I was thinking that maybe these files could cause problems when working on a Mac in Windows. Just a thought but you have found something with the SMD protocol.

OS X Mavericks + Parallels 9 + Win8.1 + USB uSD reader => Sentinel, FTW

I successfully installed Sentinel while waiting on the UPS driver to drop off my new BCD536HP. Updated the database without a hitch. Scanner arrived and what works for my rig was to *NOT* use my Mac's onboard SD card reader, but instead use a USB SD card reader. Sentinel can't see the onboard reader, but gets along great with the USB attached reader. It also didn't work when connecting the scanner to my Mac via USB cable. I'm successfully tweaking my user profile settings, favorites, etc. as expected. I have my Win8.1 VM configured with 8GB RAM and am getting good performance.

Message 'Sentinel has stopped working"

Late '12 27" iMac, OS 10.9.1, Parallels v9, Windows 8.1.
Had Sentinel working fine, created a Favorite list, bought a spare MicroSD card, went to write the file to the card, virtual machine did not recognize the card, so pulled out a card reader. Went to plug in the card reader, Sentinel closed. Tried to restart, got the above message.
Reinstalled sentinel, still getting the same message.
The dialog gives the options of 'checking online for a solution' or 'Close the program.'
Tried both, no luck.
Any ideas? Not savvy to the Windows environment...

For those of you or having issues using parallel and cannot get your card reader or USB cable to read go to the parallels menu under USB and uncheck and then reselect your USB device that will reinitiate the connection

...and don't hesitate to use the scanner itself to get to your card if you're near it. It has a good SD card chipset recognized easily by windows.

Read posting #58 above carefully and if you follow all the steps you will be successful! I've got a MacBook Pro running Mavericks, VMware 6.0, Windows XP and I followed the steps I outlined and all works perfectly as I assume Uniden envisioned. Plug your BCD436HP into your computer with the USB cable and run the Sentinal program to do what ever you want. Works perfectly! Cheers.

I'm Missing Something, please HELP

Trying to follow these instructions, but I'm not completely sure they are as thorough as someone like me needs to get this going. Currently, I've successfully put the Mavericks on my MacBook PRO. Next, I went to Best Buy and bought the MicroSD card (only in 8GB) and got it inserted into my SD card slot. It took a while for my computer to recognize the SD card but I'm there now. That's were I can't get any further. I don't have anything else loaded on my MacBook Pro (i.e.. some Windows Parallels program, VMware or any of that stuff) The instructions from post #58 which said follow to the "T" and it will work, well is so far not working for me. I'm sure its' something I did or haven't done at this point, but the instructions in the post weren't "step by step" either. So I'm at a point where I can see the SD card in the Mavericks Disk Utility but don't know how to go from here. Where are the instructions for how to convert or reformat this SD card to Windows? I see the "convert" tab in the Disk Utility but it won't let me choose it. Someone please help me from this point and give me some pointers. Thank you very much.

Brand new cards are pre formatted, just copy the files from the scanner's installed sd card to the new sd card and you should be set.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. So let me get this straight - all I have to do is take the micro card out of my 436 and put it into the SD card slot on my MacBookPro using the adapter. Then what do I do reformat the MicroCard I just took out of the 436 to what?

I don't have the VM Firmware downloaded/installed on my MacBook. I also don't have Windows XP or other Windows version installed on my MacBook. Do I need both of these? I also have NOT downloaded the Sentinel Database onto my Mac. Not even sure if you can download a Windows only (Sentinel) database to a Mac. I just have several questions and trying to piece together what to do from reading all the posts associated with this thread. Thanks for you suggestion just need a little more clarification. Thanks to all those who can help.

Do not reformat the card! That would be bad.

You must have windows to run sentinel or read through this thread from the beginning for tips on running it on a Mac through winebottler.

When I got my BCD436HP to work on my MacBook Pro, I used a new micro SD card. My Mac would only recognize it if and until I reformatted the new card using the Mac's Disk Utility. I did not reformat the SD card that came with the scanner. (Kept it in case all else failed!) You must run Sentinel in Windows, it doesn't run in any Mac OS. To get Windows to run on a Mac, you must use something like VMware (which I use), or Parallels or I guess you could use Bootcamp. In any case, you will need a copy of Windows operating system. When you get Windows working on your Mac, then you can download Sentinel to the Windows portion of your Mac. Sounds complicated and a pain in the a** but that is what must be done until companies like Uniden realize that an increasing number of people use Mac computers and develop a Mac version of the software, or produce a 'cloud' version that anyone can use!

THANK YOU!!! to all of you that figured out this work around. I'm running Windows 8.1 through Parallels. Of course the first thing I did after receiving my new 536HP was try a database update. This apparently corrupted the SD card instantly. I had an error pertaining to city.dat missing. Anyway, using and external USB card reader and reformatting solved all my problems. Interestingly I never had this problem with the HP1.
