• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Yes it shows up when set to the CH-721 head. I knew it was there somewhere, thanks for pointing that out.

However it doesn't help with a CH-100 head. Some day maybe I'll have one.
Right. Changing the radio type show and hides certain options menus. You can’t do assign any of the radio keypad options on CH100. It’s either there in the menu structure or it’s not.

After the “new” microphone I ordered was a dud I decided I’d rather have a desktop mike for the home radio. I found a package deal with a very nice ZN9F mike and a brand new Scan control head.

I don’t need the control head but I did get a new speaker cable with it. That’s a keeper!

I haven't taken a control head apart. I wonder if the display window can be removed? Mine is roached. I would like to get a cheap system head and steal the display from it for mine.

I think the cheapest per unit price I’ve seen was 5 for $100 on EBay.

So back to essential Cult Knowledge: What format is used for audio files in RPM2 "Voice Annunciation"? Any tips about setting them up for the buttons of a CH721 System control head?

Thanks!

The XL-200 mobile is a very nice unit and improves greatly on the XG-100/CH100 setup but still has some simple gripes. It is much more responsive (especially under the later firmwares), easy to read display, buttons are friendly to use with a load of functions to each one. The biggest gripe I have on it which doesn't seem to be of concern for TAC is you can press the selector down to display the functions of each button on the display, but when you power off/on the radio, it doesn't stick and you have to retoggle it every time. The mic is a USB-C connection and programming is via a USB-C or WiFi.

Been searching the Forum and found this

"Export to 8kHz 16bit .wav and then into RPM which converts them to .ilbc files before sending them to the radio."

It took a bit of experimenting but I succeeded. First I created a mono 8kHz 16bit WAV file using Audacity. Next in RPM2 I created a new announcement VACONFIG001 file and imported the new WAV file. In RPM2 there's a limit on naming and file length.

Next I selected the Radio tab, selected Voice Annunciation and programmed the audio file to the radio. After that I went to the plan's Options drop down of Voice Annunciation and assigned the new sound to my "Talk-around On" button (B). Uploaded that to the radio and voila! It speaks!

That's good information. Interesting that the mic is a USB-C. Sounds like there's no digging around under the seats or in the trunk to find wherever the installer put the unit when they come in for programming. That part I like!

Ya, the XL-ESM on the XL200P is USB-C too and the Wi-Fi programming is rock solid and very fast! Just pull a few cruisers into the air conditioned bay, and program them all at once wirelessly!

The initial programming is what gets ya. I have the OTAP after that, but I did an upgrade some time back and haven't been able to use it since. I need to get that fixed, but I guess I'm just being lazy about it.

Ya, for initial programming of a quantity, it’s easier to just make a temporary network that matches the default settings already loaded. Then you can Wi-Fi them, put in a plan with your own defaults and kill the temp network!

Smart! Might have to try that on the next bulk purchase.

Compared to a 185/200, it feels solid, heavy, bulked up...and I'm sure that's because the housing plastic is MUCH thicker. That's most likely how it survives the torture test Harris claims in the flyer.

I'm still somewhat amused by the fact that the NFPA-specified survival conditions for these things would kill any firefighter long before the radio was affected.
