Odd discovery for Winston site

I discovered something interesting during some of my research this afternoon . . . The VIPER site at Winston Salem State University (WQLT398) has only four "new" frequencies (85x.xxx MHz) in the FCC database. The Radio Reference database shows those four, PLUS 851.3 MHz, and 853.75 MHz. The latter is showing as the control channel. I'm not in a position to receive that site, but I wonder if that may be contributing to the issue that ttrainor is having. Maybe one of the database administrators on here needs to call Washington and get the FCC to update their database.

Any thoughts on this?

(By the way, the "updating their database" comment was a joke . . .)

ttrainor,

I am in Rockingham County and do not have a Home Patrol, but otherwise might be able to help you out. I spend most of my time in Guilford County, and travel 220 a LOT! Not sure if you are in the Summerfield, Stokesdale, or Oak Ridge area, but would suggest that you try monitoring the Mayodan, Wentworth, and Reidsville sites for VIPER traffic. You should also be able to receive Booth Mountain in Stokes County, but it will be on the fringe for you. I have plenty of more detailed information regarding site locations, and personal observations regarding coverage, that I can pass along if you want to contact me by PM, or e-mail (I have a gmail account with the same user name that I use on here).

Of course, that offer stands for anyone else on the forum.

I think it helps to remember that while going through the process of rebanding that sites/frequencies will be adjusted as needed and that there might be a delay in what the FCC shows and what we actually hear on air (and see in our trunked radio decoder programs). :)
Of course the more folks that submit verified, accurate updated info the better off and more accurate the database will be for everyone.
Happy Monitoring

Thank you to everyone for looking into this. Seems things are still getting sorted out with the rebanding process... I'll be patient and try again later.

David,

Just got off the phone with the boys in DC. Trunk88 reports that site 45 "WSSU" has 853.4875 as a primary control & 853.9500 as the alternate control (this was as of Thursday).

Bill,

Doing a quick search of the High Peak site I'm showing:
851.5375 - WQOW347
853.9875 - WQOW347
851.1625 - WQJW970
851.8250 - WQJW970
852.1875 - WQJW970
852.6125 - WQJW970
853.5125 - WQJW970
856.9625 - WQOZ684
858.9625 - WQOZ684

Plus all of those in and the band plan and you should be able to hear something. I'm hoping to travel up to Boone sometime next week, once I do so I'll run Trunk88 and see what I can find about High Peak. I'm also willing to meet up with you for a few minutes and make sure you're programmed up properly.

I have a dumb question. When all the sites have been rebanded can we just change the frequencies for the control/alternate channels and leave the site type alone or will we need to stay with the custom/reband site type with the band plan? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around this. By the way, I'm using Freescan on a 996XT. Thanks for any advice.

You'll have to continue to use a custom band plan even after changing the control channel. Hopefully the switch to full P25 will happen shortly after rebanding for the eastern part of the state, which won't require a custom band plan for sites.

You will need to leave custom band plan in place since the frequencies are rebanded frequencies. This is until the shift to P25 takes place.

Brunswick and New Hanover Rebanded?

The RR DB shows VIPER freq's in the 866mHz range for Brunswick and New Hanover sites. Have any of the sites rebanded yet? I want to program my 996XT with Freescan for an upcoming trip.

The east coast will be last to be rebanded, ETA around end of year. If you want to be safe you can load a second system with the rebanded frequencies (current frequency -15.0) and load custom band plan for the site.

Hamstang, I can't directly answer your question; however, I can confirm that as of less than ten minutes ago the following sites have NOT been re-banded:
C123 035 Altamahaw
C123 053 Pelham
6038 025 Yanceyville
Chances are, whatever is in the RR database is correct.

The following was taken from the 2nd quarter VIPER Newsletter:

P25 site conversion: the western half radio reprogramming effort is complete and we are scheduled to complete the eastern by 31 December 2013. We anticipate commencing the P25 infrastructure upgrade,
provided that all funding has been received,on or about 15 January 2014. Every effort to minimize the impact of the site conversions to the end users will be taken into consideration and more specifics about that part of the process will come in future updates.

Rebanding site conversion: we have completed the FCC mandated re-banding effort at 100 sites in the western portion of NC. This completes the rebanding effort in the western part of NC. The rebanding effort in the eastern portion of the State is dependent on the commencement of P25. The map below represents the VIPER infrastructure rebanding phases in NC with all counties to the left of the black line being completed.

I wanted to pass it along.

So when the P25 takes place. How will it mess the the scanners like I have, what will I have to do to still pick up everything I'am now or will it even mess with the scanners?

The question here is with the system currently at P-16, how much will it affect audio quality when it changes to P-25.

Hopefully if your scanners are P25 compatible, then you should be fine. I am in NE NC and we have not had our VIPER sites upgraded yet. The other radios systems in my area are non trunking. So I have nothing to compare the P16 with P25 to. Hopefully except for lowering the controller freqs in your scanner, nothing else will change. Depends on your scanner. If you don't know if it will work with P25, feel free to tell us the make and model number.

I found out from a very reliable source that the eastern part of the state site work is supposed to start in November (rebanding and P25 upgrade). I have no other details but this is right off the press from a meeting held today
