UPLAND, Ind. (WISH) - - Police say a Grant County man killed his wife during a hostage situation at a home in Upland. According to investigators, the man also took his own life by shooting himself in the head.

Police have identified the woman as 39-year-old Amy J. Nose. 42-year-old Paul “Byron” Nose was her husband.

Police were called to the home in the 600 block of West North around 7 a.m. Thursday after a neighbor called 911. The neighbor reporting hearing gunfire coming from the home.

The home is owned by Amy Nose's mother. She told a neighbor Wednesday morning that Byron Nose had kicked her out of her house and taken her daughter hostage.

Upland police responded to the home and initially were unable to make contact with anyone in the house. Several police departments and members of the SWAT team gathered at the scene.

A neighbor who lives across the street said Byron Nose had been texting throughout the day and in one message he admitted to beating his wife and that she was injured.

Negotiators had contact with Nose during some points of the day but couldn't get him to leave the house.

Two state police Emergency Response Service Teams entered the home just before 5:30 p.m., after using a "noise flash distraction" device. Officers fould Amy Nose dead in a bathroom. Byron Nose was in a hallway, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died of his injuries, before medics could take him to the hospital.

The Noses were apparently in the midst of a divorce. Officers report they have been to the same home in the past for domestic disturbances involving the couple.
