I’m in Clayton with a new BCD325P2 trying to listen to NCSHP in JoCo troop C I believe I’m programmed to the viper tower in Smithfield, I can hear NCSHP that’s awesome but also my scanner is picking up unidentified iD’s I was wondering if there was a different way to program to just get troop C. And nothing else? I’m very new to this.

The way NC SHP dispatches out is they will tie sometimes 2 or 3 different troops together and dispatch out. When you can do is just put in Troop C Dist 6 and you would hear then dispatching calls out for multiple counties but you will only hear District 6 troopers coming back to the dispatcher

This. Typically C6 is multiselected with C3(Wake) or C2(Wayne)/C5(Wilson/Greene).

It also sounds like you may be picking up unwanted talkgroups on that Smithfield tower. That site carries a lot of traffic so you may have a wildcard or TG search/ID search set up, making you pick up more than you are bargaining for. I'm not familiar with the scanner you mentioned so I don't know for sure.

Can you tell what kind of traffic you're picking up or the talkgroup ID/radio IDs?

Thank you both for the responses, I was able to stay on that tower but instead of ID searching on my scanner I choose ID scan and then it only pulls in what I programmed.

Thats right I'd search will search for all talkgroups that come across the site as long as they arnt encrypted. I'd scan will just scan the list of talkgroups that you habe programmed into the scanner. Welcome to the hobby and to this community

Thank you! Listened on analog for years just getting into this digital stuff, one other question I had is there a way to listen to Boone NC, FD and PD dispatch off the Smithfield viper tower?

For that no unless they are on a statewide channel ie an event channel and someone local is also affiliated on the smithfield tower also. You can only hear 1 or 2 counties over on local channels ie boon pd or such but the statewide talkgroups can be heard anywhere in the state as long as someone local to you and your tower is affiliated with both the tower and talkgroup being used in Boone

If you're monitoring C6, you'll hear HP Raleigh giving calls out to Wake County cars, but you won't hear the Wake County cars responding back because they'll be on C3. The comm center is talking to both talkgroups at the same time, but they respond back on their respective group.

Add in if you hear the telecommunicator/dispatcher call for a C3xx unit then you know it is a Wake County trooper. If they call for a C6xx unit then you know it is a JoCo SHP Trooper. The above is correct in that with a Multi-Select you may not hear the Trooper respond on the talkgroup you are monitoring.

Also note that multiselected districts vary day to day depending on scheduling/available TCs. C6 is commonly selected with C3, but I've also heard them with C2 and C5.

Depending on the particular TC working the console, they may not multiselect at all... it's rare but frankly lovely when that happens-especially working a district by yourself at 1am. Staffing issues at JFHQ has made that more and more rare these days.
