i agree seems like the solution is just to rub off the top coat of paint and have a shiny face,
would make returns a lot easier rather then just changing the faceplate to just rub off the paint

the numbers and letters seem to remain on so that isnt a problem.

I agree with you about the faceplate. Mine looks better since i removed the paint with lighter fluid. I did not want to part with my great scanner, I did put a screen cover over the plastic display once i had removed the paint.and have had no problems with scratches.. I use mine mostly as a base but like being able to take it with me when i travel or go into St Louis. Mine monitors their P25 system very well. As i said on an earlier post i use amplfied computer speakers on mine and ny wife keeps telling me to turn it down. For an old man who was scared of getting a new scanner to receive digital this was the one for me even though i had only had uniden scanners in the past. I researched the 800 vs the HP and and made the right decision thanks to comments on Radio Reference Gre postings.

Is there a consensus on whether this issue affects all 800's, or just a particular run? My serial number is 001502, and I have no faceplate wear at all.

Just got 002488 last week, and already showing wear and scratching.

I think I'll wait until they have some sort of fix before I send it back.

Other than that, I'm thrilled with it!

I have serial number #2247. Purchased two days ago on 7/12/11. The finish has already worn off right below the rocker arrow switch from very minimal use with clean hands.
Still a great radio with a minor cosmetic flaw.
I too will pursue an RMA for a replacement faceplate when they fix the problem.

I received my new front plate from GRE yesterday. After a slight problem with the ribbon cable and great support from them, it looks and works like new. They deserve a five star plus rating for following up on every phase of this problem. A special thanks to the tech who actually called me with the solution to my cable problem.

paint remove

I had the same problem with the paint rubbing off my .SN:002405.
So I removed the rest of it, It's all gone and looks very good.
The face plate is very shiney black. The words (GRECOM) and
(EZ Scan Digital) are still there. They are under the plate. They
won't come off. The only problem is fingerprints on the smooth
black plate. Try it You'll like it.

Yes i have 2 psr 800's and the second one has that problem, but i did like you with my thumb nail took off the rest of it and wow looks really nice. Other wise it's a outstanding radio, that would"nt be something i'd return the rig for.

hmm, I'm curious and would like to see a photo of your 800's side-by-side...paint removed vs. paint on as it's shipped. Is that possible?

I don't have an 800 now but a pic like that would ease my mind (and maybe others) regarding the simple solution you guys have come up with, that of removing all of the paint yourself. (I don't recall seeing a pic of all the paint removed in this thread)

Well take my word for it ,it look's like it was shipped that way. Instead of dull matted front the name GRECOM on the top will not come off and the EZ Scan Digital on the lower part front won't come off either, Its really just a matter of choice. Unless your going to do some really stealthy at night work, all dressed in black you may want the unshinney one. Hoped this helped, maybe someone will go the extra mile and take photo's of it for you.

I can load pictures of mine that are exactly as described one has a shiny face plate and the other has not worn off. I can post the picture later on this morning if no one beats me to it. the radio that still looks new has a serial number in the 1000's the radio that had the issue with the face plate has a serial number in the 2000's. the 2XXX serial numbers seem to be the batch with the issue. it doesn't bother me though it is a great radio and the shiny vs the flat black appearance of the face plate doesn't bother me enough to return it, I think the shiny one actually looks kind of sharp. but any way I will post the pictures of both for you this morning probably around 10 or 11.

have a good night,
bob

I would love to see the photos my radio started doing this by the 5th day...Monday I will call GRE and have them send a new face plate. I made the mistake of wiping mr radio with a clean dry t shirt and scratched the heck out of it ( difficult to not swear when typing this, my personal thoughts are far more descriptive and offensive....:>) ) I love my PSR 800 with the addition of a usb/ac converter and a decent antenna it outperforms any scanner I've ever seen or owned.

they can send you another faceplate but as far as i know they still have the issue so it will be the same thing. i still suggest they just ship it with the shiny face, or do whatever they were doing in the 'roughly first 1000 serial numbers that didnt have a problem.

but id be okay with the shiny face

Happy with a shiny faceplate

I agree with having the shiny plate and not sending it off. I think it looks great plus i don't want to part with mine for any length of time and i certainly don't want to attempt to install a new one and void the warranty. I think it actually looks better with the shiny plate.

Me likes

Thanks Torontokris for posting the pic. I agree, it does look very nice.

I've read a lot about the display scratching easily on this radio. Seems it would be pretty tricky getting that paint/coating off around the display without really scratching it up.
