I'm looking to get one of these. Are there still paint issues with the newest production runs?

@Kel - Mine is Serial #3412 - I have had it for a month now, and no evidence of the front plate problems others have described.

I called GRE and spoke with Amy, nice girl.

She said the replacements should be available in two weeks.

Guess they're on a slow boat from Japan.

She took my information and said they would mail me one when they're available.

Mine has SN 2612 and yes, the paint is starting to come off. To me it's no big deal; I've seen the "shiny" pics and I like the way it looks like that.

I don't have any lighter fluid in house as others have used to remove the remaining paint. Anyone know of anything else that may work? I tried fingernail polish remover and that didn't work.

:)

Try WD-40 - it worked for me.

I'll have to send mine back a second time. I just received it back about two weeks ago; they replaced the faceplate and within a week of getting it back, the same issue has occurred. I had the original unit less than a week before it occured. At this point, given the extra money I've had to spend out-of-pocket with their RMA process on a less than three month old unit; I want it replaced with a later serial number. My current one is in the low 2000's... I suspect that when the told me the new faceplates were in; they were actually just trying to close out RMA's before the end of the month. I'll be calling them first thing on Tuesday morning!

Having come from a great unit such as the PSR-500/600; this one has been a real disappointment so far.

Agree.

GRE replaced my faceplate (ser #2043) in July. In 5 days the paint started coming off just like the first one. After a couple of weeks removed the paint and now have a shiny faceplate.

I like the PSR-800 - They just need to fix the faceplate issue.i

I spoke to soon! mine just now started to peal Serial 004141...Is there a step by step on how to take the faceplate off without voiding the Warranty? I have already started to scratch it off to get that shiney look...Now i wanna take the faceplate off to make sure I get all of it.

I used lighter fluid and a soft cloth. It will take off the paint but will lave the lettering on the control portions. I also bought a screen cover to protect the plastic display which people have said scratches easy. I have now had mine for over 3 months and really like it. It receives a P25 system great that i could never receive when it was trunked analog as i live in a deep valley over 18 miles away. The county i live in is going digital in a little over a year to be able to operate with 3 other counties on the same system so i figured i would get a jump start learning the radio. I personally don't care about replacing the cover as i am happy with mine the way it is.

Thats what i am saying...If they are having this many problems with the face plate and it is not a realy big deal why bother getting the faceplate exchanged? why not just clean the crappy paint off and be done with it!

found a good cleaner

Well I have to have things right, and the faceplate after 3 days had smudged and I had nicked it. I tried WD40 but really had to scrub SOOOOOO I tried some Goof off. In less than 5 sec it was totally clean. I was amazed the name brand and EZ scan digital lettering stayed on. It worked flawlessly. I actually like the new look much better.........

Later,

Tom

Well I sent mine back once again for the face plate wear issue and they are sending me a replacement unit with a serial number above 4000; however, I was also advised that in-fact they have NOT resolved the issue and that testing was to begin later this week to see what is causing this issue. The representative also stated that this issue doesn't appear to be affecting all PSR-800, nor a specific serial number range, etc. This is why they are suppose to be taking random samples from stock for the testing. My guess is a new face plate won't come before the end of the year and it's time to simply consider the solution offered by others and simply remove that coating from the display.

The new radio is suppose to arrive on Monday of next week so we'll see what happens. The last one developed the problem within two days of receiving the radio back from GRE; now I'll get to play with a new one. FYI, my old serial number was 204x and was purchased from HRO in Delaware in June.

Maybe try a clear LCD lens protector?

I don't have a PSR 800 and someone else may have already thought of this idea, but if the finish is wearing off why not use one of the clear LCD lens protectors over the front? You could use a sharp xacto blade to form cut outs around the buttons.
It seems it would be a cheap investment.
