Thanks Torontokris for posting the pic. I agree, it does look very nice.

I've read a lot about the display scratching easily on this radio. Seems it would be pretty tricky getting that paint/coating off around the display without really scratching it up.

When using lighter fluid or similar fluid the paint just slides off. No scraping, I just used an old soft cotton t-shirt. Did not affect the lighted display area and later covered it with a cell phone screen display cover I cut for the 800.

With the paint removed the faceplate is very shiny/glossy. Finger prints are very visible but clean up easily. After a few days of using the 800 with the paint removed I dont think about it or am really concerned. If a new better faceplate becomes available I will replace it just to maintain the resale value.

Thanks for sharing...yeah if I decide I want an 800, I will not let this issue hold me back. A complete turn around from when this thread first started.

Could care less about the faceplate on mine. Mine looks good. Actually looks better with the shiney finish. I wouldn't do without my 800 for such a minor issue. I monitor a P25 system near me and it does an outstanding job especially since i am in a deep valley 17 miles away from a tower. I couldn't receive the same system when they were trunked.

faceplate

I took all the finish off of mine to. Looks good now. GRE did send me a new faceplate if I ever decide to change it.

Thanks!
I sent them an email on their website. If it doesn't work, I'll call them.

FNG here :) Scanner listener since i was a kid (thank you radio shack), and amateur radio enthusiast for 2+ years. Pleased to be aboard.

Anyway, I wanted to FYI that I received scanner serial 35xx (low xx) and it started coming off the very same night I took it out of the box. I thought it was just finger grease that could be wiped away like a vigorous wiping of your laptop bezel............ WRONG. I gave it a few good swipes, and it took some of the surface with it! NOT pleased. But, the device performs amazingly so I'll look past it. I'm definitely going to take the extra cover I have left over from my ebook and cut it to protect the LCD.

Just wanted to share, the faceplates are still vulnerable.

Recieved my new unit with SN.in the 4000 series and it has not rubbed off yet after a couple of days.

I'll have to send mine back a second time. I just received it back about two weeks ago; they replaced the faceplate and within a week of getting it back, the same issue has occurred. I had the original unit less than a week before it occured. At this point, given the extra money I've had to spend out-of-pocket with their RMA process on a less than three month old unit; I want it replaced with a later serial number. My current one is in the low 2000's... I suspect that when the told me the new faceplates were in; they were actually just trying to close out RMA's before the end of the month. I'll be calling them first thing on Tuesday morning!

Having come from a great unit such as the PSR-500/600; this one has been a real disappointment so far.
