I agree there should of been more testing with the units before they released. The battery problem is a huge issue.

Just fyi.. from this post: http://forums.radioreference.com/1712517-post2.html

"At first I was having the "battery issue" (GRE800), but after adjusting the voltage settings (search the forums for some starting points), I now get nearly 10 hrs of continuous run time (using 2700mah batts)."

Just now got off the phone with "John" at GRE. ...seems the drill is, you call, you give them info, and then they pass it onto their "RMA" department. The RMA dept will send you an email - I am waiting for this now.

Well, after waiting for a full week, for a phone call and or email (they have both), I'd heard nothing. So, today I called again. Spoke to someone else, had to tell my story yet again, and then was told someone from the RMA dept. will be calling me... yea, we'll we'll see.

So far, my first call with "John" was very pleasant, but pretty much not effective. After a week with them having two ways to contact me and nothing, I'd say their CS is lacking. Oh well, typical I guess.

i bought a psr 800 about 2 weeks ago and it had this issue on its 3rd day. I dont remember the exact serial number but it was somewhere in the 4000s. that wasnt the only complaint i had about it so fortunately the seller is allowing me to exchange it for a 396xt

well I recieved my 800 two day's ago and mine just started to show the wear.

This is what you want to do. On Monday submit a trouble ticket online on their website. That is the best way to get things done. Either you can ship in your GRE PSR 800 or they can ship you out a new faceplate. They are really good with support and they will take care of you. I took the option of having them ship me out a new faceplate and I will just keep it on hand so when this one really wears out I will have a new faceplate. I just rubbed all of the silk off and I have a shinny faceplate. No worries

Good Luck

I just got mine a few weeks ago and here are some good ideas to do.

Number 1 buy a card reader and an extra micro sd card. Transfering data from the software to the radio is really slow and you will loose your mind. Once I bought a card reader it is really fast.

Number 2 buy an extra sd card. They are really cheap and the card readers are really cheap too. I just bought an extra 2 GB stick and I use it as a backup to backup my data. I corrupted the SD card several of times and had to re-format it. Make sure you also read the posts on how to set the battery voltage settings on the forum. You need to set the battery voltage settings so the battery meter reads rights.

Last but not least this PSR 800 is a BATTERY HOG. I am serious. Don't use those cheap 15 min chargers with cheap batteries. You might get 1 hour of battery life out of the scanners.

I went on Amazon.com and bought a Powerex MH-C9000 battery charger and Powerex 2700 mAH battery pack of 4. I get about 4 to 6 hours of battery life now and I keep all of the back lighting off when I am on battery power. Also never charge the batteries in the unit. Always charge them in the charger.

If you have any more questions feel free to post on the forum. Everybody is pretty good about helping out. This GRE PSR 800 Radio is a great unit and I sold all of my Unidens which was a BCD 996XT and I also bought the GRE PSR 600. It decodes ditigal transmission really well. I still have my BCD 396XT which I can't part with, but maybe soon. Its a pretty decent scanner too.

Pepsima1 ...yes I have the Powerex MH-C9000 battery charger and Powerex 2700 mAH battery packs also for my PRO 106. I have 3 sets I rotate and 1 set of the enercells from RS. the enercells are not as good and one cell is really not that good. but anyhow that's good advise on the spare SD card and ill pick one up. next time I update my RRDB onto the card ill try and just insert the card right into the PC its self. yes I also have my battery levels tweaked.

Faceplate wear

Oh well,
I got mine last year when it first came out. Purchased a second one two weeks ago SN 0048xx and the same paint problem after just a day. I hate to be out of a scanner, so, maybe not a big deal for me but just to share my thoughts and keep it as is.

Does the lighter fluid trick to remove the rest of the flat finish from the faceplate do any damage to the display plastic?

Bought my PSR-800 (Serial 45xx) last week from HRO and began having the faceplate peeling problem yesterday. I'm sure happy I found this forum because I immediately got out the lighter fluid, some Q-tips, and a soft cloth -- and went to work removing the dull finish. It took some scrubbing and about an hour to get all the little spots around the buttons.

I love the shiny finish and don't plan to ask for a replacement plate. Besides, it appears that any replacement will be shiny. If the replacement is the old dull finish, it's likely to have the problem sooner or later. GRE apparently chose a poor coating and hasn't found a better one.

No, the lighter fluid does not affect the plastic LCD cover or the scanner's flat finish.

Ebay is selling these new for $395 shipped now. Between this thread, and the Youtube video explaining how to clean the dust from inside the housing...

I'm convinced! F this thing! ARE THEY KIDDING!?! This is their company's "Flagship"!?! I'll wait for something from a company who's idea of build quality isn't 10X worse than a toy from the dollar store.

Thank you guys for posting your experiences!
