PSR-800 faceplate restoration

I purchased a used 800 in the classified ads on this site last week. It had been purchased from Ham City last month and was in "like new" condition. However, I was disappointed that the faceplate around the display and keys were already showing the rubbed off paint as has been mentioned by others in previous threads. Last night I spent several hours resolving this problem. First, I had some unused cell phone screen protectors in a drawer. Cut one to fit the 800 and applied. Then I got an old tshirt and some lighter fluid and began to rub off the black dull coating on the faceplate. Underneath the dull paint is a nice shiney surface. I carefully used a slight amount of lighter fluid on the soft cotton tshirt material and rubbed away all of the dull coating. Wow! This thing looks even better with the shiney faceplate and I love it even more. To finish out the process I got my microfiber cloth used on my ipad screen and polished the faceplate and display. Man, this 800 now looks classy and performs great. No RMA to GRE for faceplate replacement for me. This restored faceplate change makes my new scanner look even better than the factory dull surface. I also changed out the factory SD card with an 8gb class 10 SD card and man did it speed up the file transfers between the PC and 800. Got 20 systems in my scan list and stuck a Radio Shack 800mhz antenna on it and it performs great in my locale. I also stuck a Diamond RH77CA on it and it does well for rural conventional systems in my area. I'm a happy camper!!!:p

I did much the same thing when my new 800 started the process you describe. It is a flaw in the unit that should not have been allowed out of the factory, but it is, for me, a very minor flaw that I can happily live with, and the other qualities of the unit make me glad I bought it. You would have known about it in advance if you had checked here at the RR forum (which I myself did not do either) since it has been extensively discussed. I agree the face plate looks better shiny. Nevertheless the seller should, in my opinion, have revealed this to you before he took your money. If he didn't, I would hesitate before buying from him again.

I received mine on 12/5/11 and since I have "greasy fingers" it started to come off that night! I knew about the issue and expected it but that first night! (S/N# 003742) But I could careless about that, I like the 800 for the fact that even after I program it with the software for my area and whatever else, I can be anywhere and add something from the database if I find myself somewhere that I have not planed on being at. Oh I love the pretty colors!

More tonight at Eleven on news channel RR!

Just received new face plate

As stated in early e-mail you will have to solder wires from speaker which is included in new face plate,
when I received mine today it has a small plug-in connencition,so no soldering, just plug in, great and as stated in
an e-mail earlier doing it yourself will not VOID your warranty, will do in a few days and see what happens!
Will take pictures and post, this is one different radio for a 40 year old monitor!~!!

I received my replacement faceplate from GRE today. It is as shiny as the original that I had after the matte finish it came with came off. I went ahead and exchanged the faceplates, mostly out of curiosity. The replacement was more challenging than I initially anticipated, but I have a working unit once again. Honestly, the solder job on the speaker of the original faceplate is far superior than the replacement, but the new one sounds fine. I am a little miffed that GRE did not supply a postage paid return label with the shipment, but I will go ahead and pay the freight to return the original part to them. At least they made an honest attempt to make things right, at least in my mind.

drake2b is correct about the speaker

drake2b is absolutley correct about the speaker wire connection to the circuit board; it is a two-prong plug and no soldering is necessary. I was merely commenting about the quality of the soldering job of the wires to the speaker itself. The tricky part for me was a tiny ribbon bridge between the two circuit boards kept popping out which I had to reconnect. The only tool you need for the job is a small (#1) phillips head screw driver.

I recieved a couple in the mail today, they did not look new, they were both scratched, but they had a clear protective cover that was hard to see,so I pulled them off and now they look new,is that normal,it was not on the one I replaced.

The original cover on mine was a flat, matte black. It scratched very easily, and once started I could remove the finish by just rubbing hard with my finger. The new one is shiny. In fact, the new one looks just like my old one did after 99% of the original finish came off, and once that happened the old one stood up to scratches very well. Upon closer inspection, I believe my new one also has a protective sheet, but it has not been scratched yet, so I'm not going to mess with taking it off until it starts to look bad, if ever.

PSR-800 paint issue

I just got done talking with GRE and they are sending a replacement faceplate with no "dupid" paint. Which most already know. But It will make me and everyone happy that they are taking care of this issue! About 5-7 days delivery. Well I hope everyone is happy with this. As long as this issue is closed after this. :)

In a similar post I receive good info from GRE. No paint replacements are available. I should see mine in about week...

I had to get my PSR-800 fixed because it was freezing and when I got it mailed back I was suprrised to see that they also added a new faceplate to it!!! I like this face plate much better. Hopefully it won't get scratched as easily as the first.

Replacement faceplate

GRE has done a great job with the follow up and taking care of this issue. I'm impressed that they have followed up via email and when the parts arrived just sent them out. No BS no well your SN is this or that
they just take care of it.

My first cover didn't have an issue.

Nice job GRE !!

PSR-800 Faceplate Paint/Covering Coming Off

See photo. This is only after having this scanner one week and removing/replacing the scanner in its case a few times to change batteries. I'm not very happy with GRE at this time. Any of you guys have this problem and how did you get it resolved? Thanks.

EDIT: OK, I just read several posts about this issue. Called GRE and their RMA department is supposed to email me. I'm hoping GRE will send me a new faceplate. I really don't want to send the 800 in for repair.

I took the paint off with lighter fluid and a soft cloth in July. You do not have to take the cover off to do it. The letters will not come off. I see you put a screen cover over your dispaly area as i did too. I really like mine and without a doubt i consider the 800 the best scanner i have owned for my use, .I have been in the hobby for years starting with a hallicrafters tunable radio back in the 50's.I have owned Gonset converters, uniden, radio shack, electra and other receivers. I listen to Police and Fire mainly as i have been involved working with them over the years. I am anxious to see if they come out with a base model.

Is removing the faceplate necessary to remove the paint with lighter fluid? If so, how is the faceplate removed?

Six screws 4 on the outside 2 under the batteries, if you are just trying to get the cover off and get the rest of the paint off. That is just to keep any liquid from messing with the "inerds" . :)

GRE has excellent customer support. I would go to the GRE website, register, and tell them about the problem you are having with the faceplate. Your radio is most likely still under warranty and they should replace the faceplate. I sent my radio in for another issue but they also replaced faceplate without me asking so I think GRE knows that there is an issue. The down side is that there is about a three week turn around where you will not have your scanner but I think it is worth it.
