It is definitely still in use. I havent heard of any open sky testing in the area or time to go live. I was listening live on IBN today with the 2 alarm apartment fire today

Listen to LVMPD ch 7 admin you'll hear the digital garble and some times on the reg patrol channels also. They have the Open Sky patched to there VHF channels but most all of LVMPD admin units like CSI are up on Open Sky. Rumor around the camp fire is testing is going well and migration to Open Sky is going forward. Which sucks big time and a waste of tax payer dollars !!!

Are those images of the actual Metro PD units or generic M/A Com photos? They look kind of funky, I guess I just like the look of traditional Motorola units.

Its easy to judge from a listening standpoint. However, we don't know what the big picture is. Perhaps criminals are using the analog system to their advantage? Police don't report this publicly. Going to OPEN SKY will solve this. Is this is the reason they are changing? No, problem not. It would be nice to know the big picture on why the change.

Yes that is a LVMPD radio in hand dont think MaCom would leave a Mot. HT1000 battery in the photo. There new portable is the same as the old Jaguar stlye like what NHP carrries. Metro has become a large dept. and has out grown its current system a long time ago. Metro's comm. staff has always wanted to be different from anyone else in town. I quess that the MaCom salesman had a good B/S line to get them to sign up. I understand the need for secure comms. but they could do that a number of ways without going to a doomed out of the box system. They should have gone on the SNACC system which will be going digital and saved us tax payers millions and have there secure comms. Back in the beginning of this Motorola sued Metro over this, it was wrote up in the RJ with some intresting info about this mess. NLVPD, HPD, BCPD and, just about everyone else is up on the SNACC system with plenty of channle capacity and secure comms. with no problems.

I thought Harris was to upgrade the P7200's to P7300's just because, After all Harris is behind on the system start-up.

I wonder if the Metro Comm people have thought this through- since no one will be able to monitor Metro after the change, all the other agencies and the news media will be calling the comm center for liaison , coordination and information. Are they going to supply some portables to some of the other agencies or just go completely silent to the rest of the county? Is there 700Mhz coverage for the rural areas and Laughlin or will they remain on VHF?

Rumor has it that SWAT is going on this month and the rest of LVMPD will be up 100% by this May. That will be the end of my listening to Metro for the past 35 years plus.

Probably SWAT members at the range again talking about radio changes.

Not to start the old argument, but the fact you can not listen on a scanner is your issue not theirs.
AND OpenSky has not failed everywhere, but that is not to say it has not had its problems.

The fact that it cant be heard on a scanner is not only my problem but a problem for everyone that listens to them on a scanner, and there was no need for them to switch to opensky when they could have saved ALOT of money and switched the snacc which is up and running just fine! And opensky has had alot of problems everywhere its been used with some type of failure and most places its not even fully operational! If metro wanted to be private they could have gone encrypted on the snacc and used the money saved on something more useful, since we the taxpayers are paying for a radio system thats not needed. And just so its clear these are my opinions from what I have read and the research I have done, and in my opinion it sucks! And no argument just opinions, you have yours and I have mine.

Well for 1 you can't monitor it on a scanner and 2 its failed everywhere its been used! Just google it and find out for yourself!
Harris has learned from their past mistakes. The LV system roll out is being done rather slow and after lots of testing. I had seen LVMPD members in Laughlin using the new radios on OpenSky this summer. In the fall they where back on the old VHF system. Obviously they had problems and the deployment was rolled back.

From sources: I'm still hearing of problems with portables in the Resort/Hotel district AKA the strip from Sahara to Harmon. This is where Harris may show its colors by pointing fingers at other causes rather than design issues. With strong RF congestion and most good antenna sites already taken its going to be a challenge for Harris engineers.

Harris and the county got cute and tried to get cozy-up with the hotel owners by offering direct interface with the new radio system. This did'nt go over very well. Most owners rejected the idea of giving up space for an antenna or such for the off chance their security may on occasion communicate with LVMPD directly.

Time will tell

The biggest reason for the upgrade is that Metro currently only has 1 channel left on their current system. With them planning to roll out 2-3 new area commands in the next 2 years that doesn't work.
