I am trying to set latitude and longitude for a business that I have programmed in my Uniden SDS200 scanner and the scanner its not accepting the latitude and longitude for the place of business. The latitude is 32.71961 N and longitude is -83.72317 W what am I suppose to type in to make the scanner accept the location for this instead of it saying out of range.

Don’t use the direction (west) when using a minus sign. (And vice versa).

edited to add: Either use positive/negative values or n/s/e/w values depending upon what format the scanner needs …. but don’t mix positive/negative values with n/s/e/w.

I tried taking out the N and W letters its not allowing me to do so via Scanner.
Then don’t use the negative sign and just use a positive number and West. I just checked my SDS100 and it uses the n/s/e/w.

You're trying to enter it with the decimal values. You need to use the 'minutes & seconds:
example- (from a DFW area entry in Sentinel)
32 48'20.67
-97 01'52.50

If I did the conversion correctly, it should come out to this:
32 43' 10.596
83 43' 23.412

I just checked the manual and you can see what system the scanner is using under the “location format” (set your location, set up gps, location format). You can switch between decimal or degrees/minutes/seconds. Make sure you are using the correct format for the data you have …. And again, don’t mix +/- with n/s/e/w.

Geeze guys... poster, enter the
ZIP code of the location and it will be close enough. You will automatically have latitude, longitude set accurately. :D

Trentbob - How do you enter a zip code to set the location of a system or talk group? I know how do do it to set the scanner location (zip search), but not for the location of a system/talk group. It only asks for lat/long.

Database search does it for you. It does not identify the location of a system, it identifies where you're sitting. It's not a flawless system by any means so if you are using zip code database search put it at 2 to 5 mile range.

Just search... keep your finger on that Channel button and if you see something you like, listen to for a while, just push enter, and save it to a favorites list you have established already, follow the prompts.

Biggest problem that people don't understand is you have to establish favorites list before you can enjoy all of the benefits of... the radio.

Note your longitude is 83.72317 W *not* -83.72317 W (-83.72317 W is the same as 83.72317 E which you do not want). Also note that some of Radioreference database make or did make the same error.

If you're appending a system from the main database, the location details for sites & departments will be included in the append. If manually adding a system in Sentinel, such as creating a new system from scratch, that is not in the database, you could get the coordinates (for the sites) based on licensing information. For Departments, either use the closest site's location, or use the database information from a conventional channel on the area, that is in the database.

Frankly, if I was creating a new system either in Sentinel, or directly in the scanner, I would simply place it in a Favorites list that is not using location control. Later, if I decided to keep the system, and wanted to use it in a list using location control, then at that point I would add the details required.

Of course oh, I appreciate that.... You and I are in total agreement. You and I know how to pinpoint our exact longitude and longitude. Not every SDS scanner buyer knows that any more than they know.........

I'm no big fan of database scanning trying to pinpoint what is pertinent to your area. I believe in database information and picking and choosing exactly what you want and putting it where you want it with all customization such as filters, excetera. We're on the same page.

The business I am adding in to my scanner isn't listed in the scanner as of right now until the database gets updated in the programming software. :)

Okay I was half asleep last night. I find if you enter your ZIP code and save the ZIP code then anytime longitude and latitude is called for it's already in place, it doesn't have to be entered.

Steve explains things very well in post number 12. Good idea to use a favorites list not using location control.

No problem Trent :). I was kinda lost when trying to find the way to enter the latitude and longitude correctly without it messing up but I am glad I got it working it was my first time entering a business in to my scanner and same with latitude and longitude information.

On my SDS100, I can change the coordinates format. Menu, Set Your location, Set UP GPS, Location Format. I assume the same is true for the SDS200? When setting the coordinates manually, with the cursor sitting on the direction, you can press the keypad numbers to toggle N/S and E/W.

The 100 and 200 basically operate the same, so yes...

May I suggest setting your GPS format as decimal (XX.XXXXXX). Set everything else as decimal format also, (Google Earth, etc, etc). It is the easiest format to work with and easily cut/pasted when needed.
