I've had a lot of hobbies in my nearly 50 years. Amateur radio, well, radio in general, is the best by far!

Thought it would be time to do a little update on the numbers (although if someone upgraded, and voted again they are still in the count, sorry)

Extra 49
Advanced 2
General 22
Tech 17
No ticket 2

I listened to hams on HF for 30+ years. Finally I decided to speak up so I got my tech license in September 2013, then a month later in October 2013 I took (and passed) the general exam. I have the study book for extra, hopefully I'll take it sometime in the next six months.

So, in summary,
Technician in September 2013
General in October 2013
73s

This time I will not mess it up, like that last one.

Here is a poll about those who are on these boards, and what class of license you have (or do not). I am wondering what the diversity of licenses we have here. I read something that roughly only 10-15% of all amateur operators make it to extra. As I forgot to add the poll question, just add your class, if you do not have your license, just say no ticket.

I am an Extra Class. Got it in 2011.

CB - 1975
Novice - 1978
General - 1979
Advanced - 1980
Extra - 1980
"Business band" radio - 1980
GMRS - 1984
GROL with ship radar - 1990

Tech since Jan 04'.
I took and passed the general written a couple times in the code days but always choked on the code test. I've studied up on general and extra for the past two years but the local club only tests every two months for an hour and it's always while I'm at work haha.

Tech in 1991, remaining at that level until 2011 when Field Day flung a craving on me for HF plus I had moved to a house that would accommodate my radio interests. I'm in the process of expanding my antennas to outside, currently using an attic setup for HF & VHF/UHF. As a General, I've been studying for Extra, have tried twice without success. I enjoy working Special Event stations and like when my club sponsors one of the Route 66 stations in September. It's fun to work the mini-pileups.

Ist licensed as Novice, Feb 1974 and became a General 8 months later. 2 weeks later Advanced. In those days, Novice was a non-renewable, 2 year license. No VE's, all tests given at FCC Field Offices.

Extra some time in 00's.
